After upgrading to 5D, my 18-55mm non IS kit lens that came with the rebel xt has been relegated to paper weight duty. Recently I’ve found a new use for it, as a hi-power magnifying glass! It works pretty well, just look through the lens from the front element into the back element, as you would when you reverse mount. The zoom changes the appear ant size of the object, with bigger size = smaller aperture. The focus ring also works to focus the subject.
It’s been a long time since I looked through a microscope (high school science class), but to me the appeared size of the image through the lens is much larger than a normal magnifying glass. I can see a lot of detail, such as the fabric that weaves the paper towel! I’m having a lotta fun with it! :D
