This Sunday I've booked a family portrait session outdoors, which is just my kind of thing, but this one involves 5 individual (but all related) families. Just curious if anyone who's done more like this than I have, might have any suggestions/ideas. ...like should the individual families wear the same color, suggestions for posing 16 people in a relaxed-casual pose, etc....
thanks,
daniel

Nope, never done that, but I hope you have a "Wrangler" in the budget! ;-)
Good luck, & let us know how it comes out.

wrangle?
Basic crowd control: where's little Timmy? Okay, now your group needs to go wait over there, while I make sure this next group is ready. Uncle George, could you please daub your bald spot? I think that glisten might cause a problem...
Good luck on your shoot!

One more question. I'm writing up a simple contract for this job and am only going to have the lady organizing the event sign it. Thus, holding her responsible for payment, etc. This was her idea, rather than having a seperate order for each individual family involved. I agreed as it sounds like less paperwork, organization of images and only 1 proof set to prepare. BUT, I'm wondering now about using the photographs as advertisement, marketing etc. If I do choose to use some of the photos of any person/family that didn't specifically sign my contract am I still covered by the signature of the lady organizing the event? I suppose the same situation would be true at a wedding in that just the B&G sign the contract, but I take photos of guests, bridal party, etc and have the right to use those later on if I choose. Right?
thanks,
daniel

I have never done one of these, but I have seen pics from one. In it, each family wore a different pastel color tee shirt. I really was cool. In one picture all of each color were grouped together. And in the other they were all scattered throughout. Hope all turns out well

danielI had this question about photographing a security team for a music festival. The client was the proprieter, and he would sign the contract, but I wasn't sure if he could proxy for all of his employees on the model release. I'm sure a laywer could draw up soem verbiage in the contract that would release the images to me, but I didn't have time. The consensus on this forum was to somehow obtain model releases from all subjects. It didn't matter, in the end, since the client wouldn't accept my fee.

Wow... I hope 10D has enough detail to actually hold that much face detail.

...enough detail? I'm not sure I follow. Why wouldn't the 10D be capable of producing enough face detail?

Well... If you have 50 people stuck into a frame with a full body shot...
How much detail would there be? It's a concern for me.

How much detail would there be? It's a concern for me. Only you can answer that question! How good are you at getting a sharp shot & how big will you need to make a print & what distance will it be viewed at? Try it & see for yourself how far you can go. ;-)

I understand that 50 full bodies in a frame isn't going to be the same as tight headshots, but why would a 10D be less capable of doing that? I mean, I know its 2MP less than, say a 20D, but still; If I can produce 11X14 prints of a head shot with a 10D, why couldn't I produce the same size with a large group? I would think that most people just assume that you aren't going to see as much detail in each individual face in a large group shot as you are in a headshot. I guess, I'm just not understanding your implication that another camera would do a better job. I've seen large group photos with D60's that look fine in my opinion. Heck, I've seen large groups with P&S's that look descent.
BTW, 5 families don't typically make up 50 people. It was actually 16 people, and the large group shots turned out ok. I think they could have been posed better, but given the conditions (90% humidity & 95 degrees AND crying 6month olds and tired 85 year olds)....I think they are acceptable. I'll work on getting some posted for comments.
thanks,
daniel
