The college I cover plays the local minor league team in a preseason exhibition game. It's the only time we use wooden bats, so it is interesting to see one explode. In the first inning Lancaster Jethawks first baseman Mark Ori gets sawed off and grounds out to the pitcher.

Sweeeeettt! You usually don't see them with the barrel still in the frame.

Everyone loves broken bat shots (except editors) and most of the time they suck, I know one who had her whole portfolio of broke bat shots - not one good one in the bunch. This however, is a good one! Face, barrel, ball, all good...rare one.

awesome capture as others have said... the best part is the backlit sawdust still in the air!

and that one sawed right in two. Usually, they shatter anymore leaving shards of splintered wood going in all directions.
Nice shot. Glad to see something like that.

Thanks for the positive comments. This actually is my first broken bat. In all the years I have shot for the college there has been only 1 broken aluminum bat. This exhibition game is the only time they get to use wooden bats. My favorite part of this is that cloud of sawdust!

EXCELLENT shot! Love how you can see the ball and both parts of the bat in the frame!

Great timing. I used to play in a wood bat league in high school. It's a heck of a lot different going from metal to wood. Nice shot!

question: are wooden bats supposed to resist breaking if hitting from the thinner part of the bat?

That's great!
Do the bats have to be 'knocked in' like cricket bats?
My husband was a keen cricketter before we moved to the US and the sound of hours of knocking in for each new bat really tried my patience!

They dont need to be. But like cricket, baseball is full of strange traditions and superstitions. One belief is that you can improve the hardness by rubbing the surface of a bat with bone. I'm sure there are other methods of prepping a bat.

Just a double tap. This shot and then the follow through of the swing.
