because along with hair scrunchies, pagers, and the Spice Girls, selective coloring went out in the 90's . (that's an opinion, of course..... I still see many women wearing scrunchies  )
AS far as your photos, it looks like you caught some nice moments, but you need to work on your exposures and flash a bit more. #1 is a perfect example... it's a white dress floating in a sea of blackness. I wanna see where she is and what she is doing.
The Daddy/ Daughter dance shot is a nice moment (why are there 2 posted, tho?)
Not much of a fan of the soft treatment done to 6... again, just an opinion

I really like 4 and 5. You captured a really sweet moment.

I really like the Father Daughter dance, I dont like number one, it would be better if we could see more of her face. I like the last one, but I too dont care for the selective coloring as it makes her look as if she was placed there in photoshop. And I like the one with her mother

Hope to see more from you soon!

People who have been professional photographers, or enthusiasts for a long time, tend to be up on the new trends in photography, and sometimes have great distain for the old and the perceived tired fads, like selective color. What we fail to realize, however, is that it isn't old to the client, and they may want it and be thrilled with it, seeing it as "new" and "interesting" and all that. Every time I SEE a maternity photo with someone adult or child kissing a pregnant belly, I roll my eyes, because to ME, it is cliched and trite and I just don't want to shoot it! But to the newly pregnant who hasn't seen hundreds of maternity pics like that, they want THAT pose! So, I suffer for my craft. I shoot it, while suggesting poses that I prefer instead and they will like what they will like without bias as to the timeliness or lack thereof of the pose. So shoot what you like, selective color or otherwise, and don't worry about what we jaded photo types have to say about it. Just be aware that the feeling exists in some circles and do what you will with this comment.
Gorgeous teenager, by the way. love the father daughter dance shot!

it's a snob thing....theres a belief amongst shooters that selective colour went out with after world war one, yet almost all of them provide this to their clients.

your pics are nice, but the first one seems a bit pointless to me..

I suppose I'm a snob then. I do provide it for a client that specifically asks... but don't do it otherwise.

You know what? I don't offer selective color to my clients, and if they were to ask, I would suggest something otherwise. :) The client is not always right, even if they think they want S/C, it's your job as an educated professional to educate them as to what's better. I don't think these are bad, but some are a bit flashy. Need to work a little more on balancing your flash with your ambient lighting. Not terrible for a first event. :)

the problem was there's a lot of glass on the ceiling so i had very hard time shooting and had hard time to find right angle to have some reflection or whatever it called on the flash (nissin di622) i used TLL mode for sure

Congrats on the shoot! I found that shooting in manual mode for indoor events gave me consistent flash exposure across all my pictures. I recent shot a family event and used TTL and had a lot of post adjustments to do and swore to go back to manual mode. I did another event afterwards and shot manual and it came out much better. Also, did you use a diffuser on your flash like a Stofen? It will help by allowing you to use the flash at your subjects if you have mirrors on the ceiling.

Also, curious about what lens did you use? Thanks.

this what i thought about getting a diffuser, so im going to get one thanks!

i used 18-55mm IS EF-S and 50mm 1.8 and why? do i need a better than lens/lenses?

i think he was just wondering. have you looked at the 85 1.8?

i thought 85 1.8 is just to narrow? like too close for a small room?

Yes, I was only curious as I feel that I need to upgrade my current kit lens. I am looking at going for a 17-55, 10-22 or 11-16 and a 70-200 IS 2.8. I can't buy all at the same time so they are in order of preference. I am still reading through the countless threads on a good lens on a crop and sometimes I get fickle minded on my choices but I think this is what I need to do to step up the IQ of my shots.

Practice with the diffuser and try manual mode for indoor shots. This should help your indoor shots.

i own a 10-22 and they are amazing but i dont think appropriate for a "wedding" lens, nor a "default" lens. id suggest a 35mm. but i do love my 10-22 one of my favorite.

for a small room yes, but if space is not a problem the lens shines!

on a side not: my 10-22 captures corner to corner including the ceiling fan in my tiny 15 x 20 room. :D they are nifty.
