View Full Version : Do they make a wireless remote for the G9?

I'm going travelling alone in a bit and am taking the G9 with me.

For numerous reasons (mostly that I don't want to be too far away from my 30D) I want to take self pictures with my G9 rather than the 30D. Do they make a wireless remote for it?

Either genuine Canon or not :)

Thanks,
T.

Quick answer - no. However, if you are a little adventurous, the G9 is supported by the CHDK hack, and you can make DIY USB remote cable to work the G9, according to their website.

Here's the mechanical cable release that I use with my G9,

I think it is now sold by Lensmate.

Unfortunately, the cable release adapter is no longer available for the G9.

My humble G5 has a wireless remote that controls the zoom as well as the shutter. I can't understand why Canon removed that feature from the G series line.

Yeah, I don't know why Canon does stuff like that, especially with the G-series.

I mean, right now I own two 30Ds and I've had a 10D and a 20D in the past. While picture quality is debatable (some say the 10D had the most natural reproduction of any XXD, or even digital EOS), features-wise, each consecutive model was better than the last.

With the G-series they seem to be adding/removing features (swivel screen, remotes, time lapse, etc) at random...boggles the mind.

I wonder which G series cameras had/have a wireless remote, factory equipped?

The G6 had a wireless remote in the box with the camera, according to the Canon website (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=BoxContentsTabAct&fcategoryid=222&modelid=10463).

G3 had a wireless unit but it did not work well and did not have a good working distance. Mine gave up after a year or two. I replaced it with a cheap non-Canon wireless which was a bit, but only a bit, better.

G9 rather than the 30D. Do they make a wireless remote for it? Yeah, odd the G9 model dropped the remote jack.

You can buy wireless remotes for the G9 from a couple places that make them in small quantities (i.e., not your typical aftermarket Hong Kong stuff). As noted in earlier post, these take advantage of CHDK, or the SDM version of CHDK.

(anybody ready to dangle their G9 upside-down from a kite or an R/C helicopter?)
