Just spent the lunch hour with my new 70-200 f/4 L. Went to the lake and took photographs. Filled up a 1 GB CF card. Will be able to tell how I like it when I can view the photos on a larger screen. It does seem to hunt a bit in the shade, but perhaps that is just because I just got it and have not yet figure out how to use it properly. Tried it with and without the new monopod, just to make comparisons.

It's a lovely lens but the characteristic you describe is the reason I sold mine to go for a 2.8 Sigma. Work within it's capabilities and you will love your f4.

decent write up. I'm considering a 70-200, not sure if the F2.8 is really that much more worth it than the F4? Depends if you work a lot in low light or not too.

Yeah, limited light situations are the only reasons to pick the 2.8 over the 4. Now if you trying to do indoor sports, you need that extra stop.

I guess I will have to work with it to see how it works out.

You must really like it if you are taking it out to lunch already. With L lenses I hope you took it somewhere nice as a cheeseburger happy meal really wouldn't be classy enough.

Focus speed is all relative, depends on what you compare it to. For instance its much faster than a 75-300 or even some f/2.8 lenses like the 100 2.8 USM macro. Then again it can't touch something like an 85 1.8 for focus speed. If you use the range limiter on it you'll speed things up a little, but in general its pretty fast as telezooms go.

I took it to the lake to see what it could do. I can see it is going to take a little getting used to as it is different from what I am used to. I think I just need to find out its capabilities so that I can work within them.

It was actually a bright sunny day in Iowa. I was just shooting from the banks of the lake where it was heavily shaded. Perhaps more experience will help.

While this is true with rklepper's Rebel it is not the case with the 20D. The 20D's fastest and most acurate focusing mode can only operate with a f/2.8 or faster lens. This is why when I was thinking of getting the 70-200L f/4 I didn't. I got a faster lens to take advantage of the 20D's best AF mode.
