I bought a Canon S50 about two years ago and when I first got it I was really amazed with the shots I was getting. I'm a pretty impatient person so for the first year I put it on auto and shot away. Now I find that I think as far as composition I feel I do o.k. but I cannot get anywhere close to the quality that allot of members get here. In fact I pretty much gave up. I'm a musician and a creative person and all though I hate to admit it if I can not do something well right away I tend to give up. I really want to take better photo's and have commited myself to the task, one of my goals being able to submit a photo on this forum that I could be proud of. Here's my question I am considering enrolling in The New York Institute of Photograghy. I have limmited funds and the S50 is what I am going to stick with as far as a camera. Has anybody any knowledge on this school, would it be worth my time or would I be better off trying to teach myself from the internet and trial and error and so forth. Thanks in advance for any replies.

haha...this isnt the most popular section of the forum, give some of the regular users some time to reply ;)
i say teach yourself and post on forums for serious critiques and stuff. maybe save a little and go find a university/comunity college that has a short photography course or something. But you will shoot film and have darkroom expenses more than likely. But using an SLR will teach you a lot more about photography and give you a lot more freedom to make better photographs.

Yea, I think this forum is a great way to learn and if you have any serious questions regarding your photography post them here. It is truely amazing at what I have learnt here and my photography is getting better by the day & Practice Practice Practice, you can never take too many pictures and even the ones that dont turn out you will learn from. All important is just have fun, that is the reason you like photography & then your creative juices will flow naturally.

Community college is a good route. Not too expensive.. for the tuition. The materials is another story.

I'm taking the course right now, and I have to say that having someone critque your photos that worked for both Reuters and AP certainly makes you realize, that you better produce good work, or you'll hear about it via the cassette tape that is sent back with your photo project.
2 of the 3 I sent in for project #1 I knew where awesome, but that 3rd was lacking and thats exactly what i was told.
People always say that it just teaches you the basics, but you learned to walk before you ran didn't you?
I have seen hundreds of thousands of Motocross pics where the wheels are stopped dead in their tracks. If your riding or racing the wheels should be turning and the picture should show this. That and many other things are quickly forgotten by most people that scoff at this course.
My thoughts................JUST DO IT!!!

Thanks for all of your reply'sBossCat I am leaning twoards the course. I understand that you need Photoshop for the digital course. I have PSP but I do not think they allow that. Another factor for me as my funds are limited at this time. Sorry for my other post(thoght maybe I forgot my deodorent or something)
