View Full Version : Nikon flash, revisited

A good while ago I asked if it was possible to use my Nikon Speedlite SB-28 on my Canon EOS 350D and as I recall the answer was "yes" but I wouldn't have any automatic at all. Since I do have the Canon 420EX that's ALL automatic, I thought I'd bring this question up again.
1. Can I have a confirmation that I can use the Nikon SB-28 on my camera?
2. Do I need some special hot-shoe or other connection to make it work?
3. Has anyone tried it and know it will actually work (even if it'll be all manual?)
Since my 420EX is a bit weak it might be a good idea for me to play around with the Nikon Speedlite until I can afford a better flash that's more powerful and have some manual features (and I can use my 420EX as a slave).
Input please. :D

OK, I'm confused, I saw one mention of the Nikon, but I don't feel it did answer my 3 questions.

The Nikon:
1. Will fit and work in the Canon Hot Shoe.
2. Will only work in Manual Flash or AutoThyristor Flash if the SB28 has it.
3. I tested an SB 27 in Manual Mode on my 20D in Manual Mode and it works fine.

I was shocked the other day when my Nikon friend put his flash on my 20D and it worked just fine. I don't know why but I just assumed it wouldn't work. I can just picture all the Canon ****s screaming as I'm shooting with a Nikon flash on my 20D :p .

That post is somewhat misleading. You left out the fact that you are in Manual Flash Mode, with none of the benefits of ETTL/II.

Scott, thank you!!! Exactly what I wanted to know. (Can't be much diffrence between the 27 and the 28?).
As long as I don't blow anything up I'm happy. :D I've used the SB-28 in manual with my old Coolpix since the CP didn't support TTL anyway. So I feel more comfortable with controlling the SB-28 (and I know how to dial in settings to get the power I want).
You think the SB-28 will trigger the 420EX or do I need a trigger-thingy? (whatever they are called).
I know the SB-28 triggers a Hama light I have (flash/halogen lamp I got from a friend) and the 420EX doesn't, but not sure if I need something for the SB-28 to trigger the 240EX if I want to place that on another location (like a backlight).

The 420EX has no Manual mode and will not work as an optical slave. It will only work slaved to an STE2, 550EX, or 580EX.

Alright! Thanks. Well, until I can affor a 550EX or a 580EX I'll play around with the Nikon SB-28 a bit and see if I don't get a bit more power, and use the 420EX for more "portable" shooting.

True...by "worked fine" I meant that the flash fired. I didn't intend to convey anything else.
