Headed to Barber Motorsports park tomorrow for the inaugural Indy race. I have heard they have increased the height of the fences and there are minimal places to get a clean shot. Anyone here shooting as a spectator that has seen the new setup? Did you shoot over the fence and where?

Also, any tips for shooting through a fence? I will be shooting with a 50D and 70-200 f/2.8 IS. Suggestions on setup/configuration?

The best one, pretty much the only one, is at the fan zone right before the 10-11 turn kink close to the bottom of the hill:

From the top of the public bleachers coming out of turn 11:

In other areas where the catch fence is open for track personnel, you can try and time it right to shoot through the opening.

OT: After problems with exposure on Friday, did a little research and thanks to PhotoGuy for his tutorials on shooting manual and shooting to the right, much better keeper rate, as long as you dont move your settings without knowing :-)

Your pics look great! Thanks for info, will see what I can do tomorrow. If I can get close enough to a fence, I may try to focus/shoot right through it if the AF will handle it.

I haven't shot action/sports using manual, only portrait/set shots. Should have plenty of time to mess around with it tomorrow. Sunny 16 rule is ISO 100, 1/100 shutter, and f/16.

Thanks. You will have to focus manually and then you will have a gray tint to the image, tried it, didnt like it very much :-)

How did your trip to B'ham go? Any killer shots?
New fence is a bummer but I guess it will stay, probably just to keep us gentlemen away from Danica.
