Took a few early shots in case of rain. Again!
Doug's 78 Firebird is running an .030" over 455 engine at 10.5:1 compression. Holly carb; Edelbrock 'performance' cam; 400 Turbo trans; 10-bolt 4.10 rear end; 3-1/2" Flowmaster exhaust.

Some of these engine mods kill me. Is that an aftermarket waterpump and an electric fan? What drives the waterpump?

OK, First things first. Frank, That's not just a 78 Firebird. That's a 78 Trans Am. ;)
A very NICE Trans Am at that. (One of my favorite cars of all time.)
455 + .030 over? 462 CI, Yeah Baby! Same engine I ran in mine. :D
What a SWEET car. Got any more photos of this?

My guess is that it is driven off the end of the cam shaft. How about it Frank?

I believe you, but what is in the impeller housing?

An impeller? ;) And just ahead of that, you'll find the electric motor that gets the liquids moving. Notice the wires coming to it from the drivers side?

Yeah. It looked too deep to be just a fan motor. I just wasn't sure that it was also the water pump. On our LT1(?) motors we had a camshaft driven water pump. Must be some sort of divider where the impeller used to be to properly route the fluid. Nice set up.

Sorry, Bruce, those were the only shots I took of it. I'll try to get more of these. Seems I concentrate on Mopar & the really oldies more than the other more "normal" cars.
Bruce is right. It's an electric water pump. ANYTHING that will rob power is subject to change. Back when, some guys would torch off half the fan blades!
