Canon's lens chart indicates the ES-71II is the proper hood for their EF 50mm f/1.4.
From the picture on the B&H site, it appears to be a regular cone-shaped hood.

Since the front of this lens doesn't rotate, wouldn't a tulip-shaped hood be better? I don't understand why it isn't made that way. Is there a tulip hood that will fit and work properly with this lens?

Since I'm using this lens with a 300D (1.6 crop factor), I'm thinking that a hood designed for a longer lens might work. I have a hood designed for my 75-300 that works fine without vignetting on my 28-90, even at the shortest focal length.

Suggestions?

I was wondering why it wasn't tulip shaped, either.
Perhaps the lens only benefits from a certain amount of shade, and due to the diameter of the end element it was unnecessary to make it tulip shaped?

Anyway, I purchased this lens and the hood, and it all works out okay. :)

Yes a tulip shaped hood would be more efficient , but Canon's been making the round hood for 20 years or more, so it's much more effiecient economically to keep producing it.
