There's been lots of rumors of a new Canon camera coming and I'm not sure if what I'm saying is old news or not but...
I was just told by a co-worker, whose spouse works for Canon, that they are indeed coming out with a new camera by Christmas time. It's going to be 11mp, cost around $3,000 and "5D" is the possible name. That's all that was relayed to me about the new camera.
Also if you're an employee of Canon, you can now get refurbished 20Ds for $700 with no warranty.

$700 for a camera with no warranty is not a very good deal...
$3000 for a 11mp? shoot, that's a bit pricey... only way to justify that is if it's in the 1D-series pro body...

I agree with the no warranty bit, it stinks.
who me?

BUT, if that $3K is around MSRP, street price may as low as $2.5K which would be about right in the current pricing scheme.
In reality, all bets are off until a formal announcement is made.

How much is the 20D expected to drop in price once the new model comes along? I really want to get one, but on a University budget right now.

If $700 without warranty isn't a deal, why are used 20D's with no warranty selling online (ebay, etc...) for more? If you are a Canon employee, chances are you can get discounted service for anything that MIGHT crop up. It sounds like a great deal!
I'd take a 45% discount for a refurbished 20D any day! Remember that refurburbished means it has to meet Canon's end of line quality and performance tests before it ships. Most of these cameras are essentially new, and will provide a service life equal to a new camera.

I believe its there to replace the 1D MarkII. I believe its the oldest camera out there, relatively speaking(since less than 2 years isn't long).

That's the same information I have. Any idea of the crop factor?

That's what I'd like to know too. A full frame sensor would be FANTASTIC news!, this would mean the the cost of manufacturing full frame sensors is coming down. :)

The current 1DMKII is going for arond $4000 after rebate, $3000 would be too low. The 11MP seems to be inline w/ the old 1Ds sensor so that part will make it a full frame sensor. This wold be inline to compete with the Nikon D2X. Now the only part would be the frame rate, can this camera be able to sustain 8fps in RAW without cropping??? Will the buffer be big enough to buffer the fast and larger frames??? This is important if this camera going to be fast enough to compete as a 1DMKII replacement. Thename 5D doesn't seem to fall inline with the Canon's 1 series name scheme.

Full frame sensor for 3K. I think your dreaming.

i would rather it be a 1.6 crop as i miss that extra pulling power with my lenses, but if it drops the 20d prices i would get one of them again to go with my mk2.

It's always better to have more wide than pulling power. You can always get a longer lens, but you can't get a wider lens because of the crop factor.

I don't think it will be a full-frame sensor. They are still too expensive to put in a $3K camera, and to sell the equivalent of the 1Ds Mk 1 for $3K would probably serious cut into IDs Mk2 sales. But it will probably be 11-12 MP on a 1.3 crop factor sensor in order to compete with the new Nikon.

That is not taking into account that price will drop in time. Just a few years ago the 1D w/ 4MP sensor was going for $5000. Just last week the 1DMKII after MIR was around $3200. Canon having the 11MP full size sensor available your assumption that it can't be possible is jumping the gun.

My 1D MKII is only a week old.
Of course there will be a new model soon.
I bought a snow blower - we had no snow
I bought a new lawn mower - we had a drought.
I had a vicectomy -my wife was already pregnant. :)
By the way things worked out well in the end. Life is good!

It's probably not a 20D replacement, but one to replace the 8MP 1.3x 1-series they have now.

How can it be "allways" better for anything?
It's a matter of preference and shooting style.
I could care less about wide angle personally.. and I would not give up my 8.2MP 1.3X or 1.6X cameras for a full frame 11MP camera, as the pixel density,. and thuis the overall useable detail from my telephotos would be reduced.
Now if the 11 MP camera is 1.3X.. I'm there :)

Amen to that. I'm currently at 500mm with glass and could probably do with longer as I sometimes have to get the TC out (something I hate doing). Full frame is of absolutely no interest to me. I can go plenty wide enough already, thanks.

If the new model is the 20D replacement, we can certainly utilize an educated equation to calculate the drop in 20D price.
By reverse calculating from the 300D drop (MSRP $999 -> $799) = 20% drop
By applying the same discount factor, we get $1499 x 0.8 = $1199 MSRP
If this is the NOT the 20D replacement, then we can probably reduce the discount factor to perhaps 10% or so making the price around $1349 MSRP to make the price a little more attractive than before but not entirely. Reason being that the new model may attract a portion of potential 20D buyers who have changed their minds due to the new product release. Additionally, 20D supporters will still purchase the 20D because there's no replacement and due to the lower price. It'll be a win-win situation for Canon on both models.
Am I making sense or just BSing..... :)

Now wasn't the previous version of Canon's full frame 1 series that just got updated last fall an 11MP full frame? So now you wouldn't want one of those, would you? lol :)

 So true! I just bought my 20D, so it's inevitable that a new model will come out very soon.
As far as the refurbished electronics, as a general rule I do not buy refurbished anything. Would you buy a rebuilt, like new automobile after it had been in a pretty severe accident?

I've never purchased a refurbished item before, however, if the refurbished 20D was available at the time I was buying my 20D, I'd have snapped it up for that price! :)

It better not be called 5D as Konica Minolta already came up with one. That would bite a chunk out of canon sales. Maybe "son of 1D"

My sentiments exactly ... and it's actually cheaper to buy a super-wide lens (EF-S 10-22) than it is to buy something that would get me the 640mm I'm achieving now (sort of) with the 20D/400 combination.

Wasn't there also a rumor that the 1D and 1Ds lines were going to be combined? Would this camera have anything to do with that?
