What a long strange trip it has been!

Little did I know back when I saw the Grateful Dead for the first time (my second concert ever and also the second in one week after Alice Cooper) on 6/10/73 that I would be a part of a rather unique event with one of the members. I say rather unique because there are few, if any, musicians that have celebrated a 70th birthday onstage while playing at, or above, the level that made them famous. I was originally invited to shoot this show in San Francisco but I had other business concerns that made the logistics almost impossible to pull off so I had to take a pass.

At least I was there spiritually and artistically in some form. I won't miss the 75th and 80th celebrations.

Very cool! You designed the poster? I love Phil, it's great to see him still up there doing his thing. I have yet to check out Furthur but I heard they are impressing quite a few people.

I did not design the poster. The photo on the left of the poster is mine from a Furthur show at Cornell University/Barton Hall, which for a Deadhead adds a nice cosmic twist to it. The poster artist is Mike DuBois who is quite well known. Credits are at the bottom of the poster.

Actually, since this is the first time I've seen a large rendering of the poster, I realize that the photo they used was from another show, not the Barton Hall show, which is what they said they were going to use. It's all good.

not much left of photography :-)
guitar at left side is almost vanished
cool design but execution might be better (photoshop stars look cheap to me)
they should study 60s posters more careful :-)

bw!

I hear what you are saying but I had to laugh out loud with this comment being that the Grateful Dead pretty much invented the 60's poster movement. I'm pretty sure they knew exactly what they wanted to produce.

No worries, we all reside on this blue marble. I do believe that the intended audience often "sees" other things in those posters due to chemical inhancement though. At least some of them might have thought the stars were the most perfect thing...EVER.

Holy you know what... That is fantastic... The autographed poster has to go behind glass, possibly matted and definitely framed... It's a historic keeper... Not too many like this in our lifetimes...
