me and my friend will be building a car rig to take rolling shots, is anyone on this forum really interested in buying a car rig? we will have the prototype done by the end of the month...i am interested to see if anyone here on the forum would want to purchase one. let me hear who wants one

Lets see the prototype first then decide :) I would like one, but would want to make sure it is rugged enough thats all.

I'd be interested if you'd be willing to ship to Iceland and after I've seen the prototype ;D

well we are going to try and make the prototype by the end of the month, i will definatly put up the pictures once its all done...it wont be stupid expensive like other rigs, but it will definatly be good quality and ridgid hopefully

I would be interested as long as the prototype looks rugged/stable and the price is right.

togish1

just to get a rough estimate, how much are you guys willing to pay for a rigid build? automotive rigs sells for 800 bux....so give me a rough estimate, half of that?

Where are you located? How much would shipping be do you think?

togish1

I think if the price is right and the quality is there (photos of rig and actual action shots to show this) I'm sure you could get a decent price on it.

Do take into account shipping outside of the US could be stupendously expensive for a big and heavy system. The automotive rigs is just too expensive, less than half their price and I think you could have a winner on your hands ... if it works correctly.

sorry guys....me and my colleague thought we were done....but then the welder ran out of the argon or w.e...but when we mounted the built part of the rig was pretty darn stable!!...until the half welded bracket finally gave...so all we have to do is get some more welding done and just a little more adjustment brackets done and the protype should be good!

I would be keen also, if your willing to ship to Australia lol.

togish1
5th of May 2010 (Wed), 13:04
welded the bracket last night...now all that is left is to make some small adjustments to where the magnets are mounted and buy that unbelievably priced magic arm

here u go everyone...this is pretty much my setup...dont mind my photoshopping right now lol...i just wanted to show u quickly how they came out...IMO its pretty stable as you can see...some shots i did with a driver clutching, and this shot was done by pushing...it was dark out, so i either used iso 800 or 1600...i did some with a 4 sec. exposure and they came out great just like this one...BTW this shot was taken at 2MPH shown on dash

i will be looking for a better and faster way to produce these...final product will be aesthetically better looking than shown...so can i get a head count if anyone is truely interested in purchasing a rig? i have to redo the math to see how much everything cost in parts and labor...but i would say somewhere between 400 to 450 would be the price....so lets get a list!

How is it attached under the car? Doesn't look like much clearance and thats a Honda.

togish1
8th of May 2010 (Sat), 11:44
its attached by very strong magnets...clearance wasnt too bad...and what does it being a honda have to do with it? lol im dropped 2.5 inches on that car...one of the bolts i think is bent from an earlier setup we had...so maybe thats why the clearance doesnt look like much...still have to work out a couple things here and there...ill try to have more shots in today

Brain Mechanic
8th of May 2010 (Sat), 11:54
Im still interested but still would like to see the final product.

togish1
8th of May 2010 (Sat), 11:59
this is pretty much what the final will look like...i just have to find a better elbow connector and thats it really

jacktompson
8th of May 2010 (Sat), 12:30
how much?

togish1
8th of May 2010 (Sat), 14:17
ok so we figured out how much it would be....if we get a group buy of 9 we can do 400 each plus shipping...if we cant get 9 ppl...they will be 450 pplus shipping....lets get that list together of definates

jacktompson
8th of May 2010 (Sat), 14:24
can u give a list of what you used etc?

I was just saying Honda's usually aren't very low to the ground and it looked like the rig was very close. :D

togish1
8th of May 2010 (Sat), 19:30
yea, my car is low...2.5 inch drop

nez
8th of May 2010 (Sat), 21:55
in to see the final product.
can you show a pic of and reference to see how low you are ? i have a feeling i wont be able to use it with most VWs lol

togish1
9th of May 2010 (Sun), 01:05
it doesnt look that low from the pix...but i gotta watch for pot holes and such...

how is this rig differ from a suction cup rig?

byker28i
14th of May 2010 (Fri), 03:08
I like the addition of a suction cup plus wire for additional support.

Has anyone ever tried using electro magnets and clamps to attached under car rigs?

Neodymium would be better. You wouldnt need to have the battery pack and they could hold the rig if you have a reasonable size magnet. Running power would add weight and you would have to run wires under the car.

I wouldnt trust clamps to hold a rig and my camera

Why not have the battery pack inside the car(having the rig shoot the passenger side, while running the magnets with the battery pack inside the car)

You don't need a big battery for an electro mag, probably two 9 volts per magnet could do the trick if designed properly.
Maybe I'll work on this idea if I get free time.

Haven't tried using neodymium but it just sounds like it would be a pita to take off once they are on the car. But I never worked with natural strong magnets before so who knows.....

Another thing to go wrong and another thing to photoshop out, is my thinking.

Yes it is a PITA to get them off, but they sure as hell hold :D
they are expensive too
