The Sigma 170-500mm has the range of what im looking for
and the price looks very tempting at around $500

anyone have experience with this lense?

It's pretty poor...
I'd suggest considering either the 50-500mm EX Sigma.. or the 100-400mm Canon..

yeah, the bigma is another option

I got one last year and have been using it regularly to photograph boat races. I've gotten wonderful shots with it; my only complaint is that the diaphragm tends to lock up on hot days unless I keep it shaded.
