I'm an Apple user and very new convert to the world of D/SLR.

Just wondering if other mac users out there use iPhoto to store and catalogue their work, or is there a better alternative?

Since you are new to the game, I'd stick with iPhoto for a bit.
Pretty good app.
However, iView Media Pro is what I use.

I put family pics in iPhoto (so my family can find them easily) but everything else goes in Cumulus. an excellent image database.
