This was an unexpected appearance at Walney Air show today. Sally B the B17, and 2 P51 Mustangs escorting her. I think there are only 2 B17 still flying. Hope you enjoy the photos.

Sweet! Excellent photo.
I saw 4 different B-17's flying earyler this year.
I think there are 5 or 6 in the US but that is still a very small number.

I know of one other one that is currently flying - the Fuddy Duddy which is owned by another organization but has been on lease to the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) ever since Aluminum Overcast was damaged last year in the spring when the gear collapsed after landing, causing a prop strike on all four engines if I remember right. Aluminum Overcast is being repaired, and off the top of my head, I'm thinking I may have read something saying that it will be flying at AirVenture this year, but I may be mistaken on that. I do know that Fuddy Duddy will be there, and flying. They still sell B-17 rides, which are quite pricey, but the funds do go toward maintaining (and currently repairing) a wonderful piece of aviation history.

"Yankee Warrior" was still flying last year, & I don't remember the name of the other ones.

Five B17's will be at AirVenture - I can't wait to get there next week. I'm thinking I'd better buy some more flash memory between now and then....
From EAA's AirVenture web site:
EAA AIRVENTURE TO SEE RARE GATHERING OF WWII BOMBERS
60th Anniversary of the End of WWII to Be Commemorated
...The B-17s include Fuddy Duddy, from the Wings of Eagles Discovery Center; Aluminum Overcast from EAA's collection; Yankee Air Museum's Yankee Lady; Thunderbird from the Lonestar Flight Museum; and the recently restored Liberty Belle from the Liberty Foundation. In addition, EAA AirVenture participants can experience history firsthand, by flying in the historic B-17 bomber Fuddy Duddy during the event. Those who book an EAA AirVenture B-17 flight by July 8, 2005, will receive free admission to AirVenture 2005 for the day. For more information, prices, or to reserve a seat on the B-17 during EAA AirVenture, go to http://www.airventure.org/b17...

I'm sure there are a couple sitting in museums that are in airworth condition - just the maintenance costs keep them from flying.

They are amazing machines... Every last one of them should be kept in flying condition no matter what the cost.

Our kids have seen and been in them so many times now they are bored to be around them. Note the look on our daughters face in that last picture... My cousin was flying as part of her crew that day so we spent many hours playing around with the plane and the kids were begging to go home. We had them in a B-29 once but they are really rare now.
