OK, I have been in a state for a while trying to evaluate the 28-75 from tamron and canon's 24-70L . What to do, what to do? Losing sleep over it.
Well today my camera store let me test both them side by side. The winner was the 28-75. My new addition seems razor sharp at the extremes and the price is right too. OH 6 year warranty and it comes with a hood.
Will keep you posted as time passes on how this works out.

Dante......will be interested to see what yours can do!! I recently received this lens as part of a trade and have been using it all weekend........so far seems very good but I am spoiled by the build quality of my 35L etc!! But I am giving this thing a fair shake.......if the shots turn out as good as they seem so far, it will be a nice little lens to have for those wider scenes that I never shoot!! :)
ps.......how are you enjoying 'real' tea as opposed to dreadful teabags??

Dante ... you didn't fancy checking out the Sigma 24-70 2.8 DG Macro too; the one fstopjojo tested against the Canon L a few weeks back?

You got my thank you PM right!? I love them. The only tea I drink from a bag is when I have cheap ass iced tea some one else makes. I use the very best for my personal consumption. Your teas are some of the nicest blends and highest quality I have seen in some time. Thanks again. I'm "high" on matcha as I type. LOL

I did not as my local store does not stock sigma.

My Tamron stays on my camera all the time Dante. It is so reliable and so sharp..... I only use my 3 other 'specialty' lenses when those moments are called for.
You won't regret that purchase and you'll have a hard time changing it out for another lens.

Maureen, I bought my fater-in-law a 10D and a 28-105mm canon ef lens for his birthday. He loves it and immediately gave his PS to his wife. Well I played around with his lens and I loved the focal length of this lens. So far 28-75 seems to be just what I was looking for. Dont know what I'll do with my 28-135. I know there is serious overlap now in my bag, but I think both will serve different purposes.

Haha ... Dante, why did you give your father-in-law the 28-105 instead of the Tamron 28-75?
So you could keep some edge?
I love my Tamron, even though I think that a good Canon L will definitely bring a bit of improvements ... just maybe not enough for me (now) to warrant the additional money :)
Best regards,
Andy

i wonder just how well a lens has to be made? for some the light weight, smaller diameter and shorter length of the tamron compared to the canon 24-70 is perceived as a negative but to me it is a huge positive.
i think the tamron is made well enough and is certainly of higher build quality of anything made by canon except the L series, and the 24-70 weighs almost twice as much!
the tamron has its negatives -- 28mm, no USM -- but light weight and light price are both huge positives imo.

Hahahahaha. Actaully, My cam store did not have any 28-75mm's in stock before I left to visit on a totally different coast of the US. My father in law and I are tight. great guy. Think I should have given him my 20D and purchased a 1dsmk2 for myself. Wife would have had 'bobbited" me though.
He is into macro photography so I think I will give him my tamron sp 90. Have not really decided as of yet. Might just get him one of his own.

I bought mine a couple of months ago and it has steadily taken over from my 17-40L. I never mentioned that though as I thought it might not be politically correct here. It's a very good lens. Focus is quick but noisy. I took 270 shots of preschoolers today for their annual and I only had focus issues with about 20 - but good thing is I took multiples so i was covered. Wouldn't go as far as say it is great - but very good for a F2.8 zoom. I too would have liked to try the Sigma... but didn't have access to it either. Good luck with it... I think you will have fun with it.

Both the Sigma 24-70 and Tamron 28-75 are optical gems (given good/normal copies). Both can compete optically with the 24-70L. OTOH, the Canon puts them both to shame with its beautiful USM/FTM, nice weathersealing, and overall refinement. Even though I opted for the 24-70EX at day's end, I very much like the 24-70L. Best wishes.

I have never used the subject Tamron or Sigma in the field. Seems a lot of members consider them a lot of bang for the buck. I can say, though, that my 24-70L does not disappoint.

So I'm curious. On what criteria did you decide the Tamron to be the winner?
I'm very fond of this lens, so am interested in seeing your thinking.
Price for perceived Value- Tamron is winner as it is 1/3 the cost. I can live with a lesser build quality to save 500 bones. Six year warranty compared to canons 1 year makes tamron the winner here. USM is a plus, however I did not see noisy or hunting focus on the tamron I purchased today. USM would have been nice, but again for 350 bucks, I can live with tamorn here. Optical quality is tougher to pin down. Canon is sweet to say the least. However, the Aspherical, XR DI LD tamron glass is pretty damn nice in its own right. Again for 350$$$ I think tamron is unbeatable in this focal length. Weight definately won by tamron. Canon is nice and I like heavy glass, but I think that tamron has acheived its goal of making a 2.8 lens with less elements and weight than canon. Tamron is little more than 1/2 pound lighter. That translates to some signifigance for log time walk around usage. Hell I am old and broken, so cut me some slack.
Performance- Both lenses are 2.8. Focal length differences are minor for me. Tamron won here again as of price point. both lenses were nice and sharp. Tamron was razor all thru the zoom. Canon was more hard to pin down. Color and contrast was so damn close for the two lenses, It was a wash for my old eyes. I so badly wanted to add the 24-70 to my bag, but could find no reason to do it. When there is a lens that, IMHO, equals a pro lens for 1/3 the cost, I think its silly to toss money at the L. I am not a pro and dont really care about weather sealing.
Sorry for the poorly organized thoughts. I am very tired. Hope this helps people to understand my reasoning.

Hey weasel, welcome to POTN. I understand your point here. I could have easily gone for the 24-70 and been just as happy. I am also trying to bank for a purchase of a 70-200 2.8 usm is. Oh yeah baby!

He he... Well i´m going for the 24-70L in the near future too. I´m going to stick to my 28-135IS though. Should i really??? Might be still useful.

I have the Tammy as well, and it's the only non USM lens I have - and ever will get. It's not slow, but slower... and it hunts a bit sometimes, I will never buy a non-FTM lens again. I want to be able to change the focus without having to switch a button. The Tamron is a great lens, but some day I'll get the Canon version instead, just to get USM.

The "Tami" is a nice lens (glass) but not a "solid brick" as the Canon. Since my lens purchases should last for a life time (i do hope to stay in a good shape and get VERY old  ) i rather save a bit longer and then go for the lens i really want, instead of buying things that i´d have to sell later on.
