Canon 100mm F2.8L IS macro tripod mount

I couldn't find anywhere to introduce myself on this forum so I guess this will have to do
I have had this great lens for a short time, & was wondering if anyone knew of a tripod mount (67mm) that would fit, as I can't find any evidence of Canon makng one yet

If your talking about the L series 100mm F/2.8 macro, the Canon model is the "Tripod Ring D", it's very pricey though for Canon version.

I use the generic eBay Tripod Mount Ring B(B) for my non-L/non-IS EF 100 f/2.8macro and it's perfect. I can't think of a single reason to buy a $134 "Canon" version of the Tripod Mount Ring B(B).

If I were you I would find a REPUTABLE ebay seller (99 %+ rating) who is selling the generic version. Email them stating clearly (and in simple English) that you are the NEW L and IS version of the EF 100mm f/2.8 and are they sure that this ring will fit the new lens as they have claimed?

If they reply in the positive, then buy it. If it does not fit you are only out $18 and you will be able to sell it on POTN or even locally. And you can ding their ratings and probably dispute it with paypal (since you have written communication).

If it does it....you just saved $222 for a ring. :)

I'm looking at the ebay one with interest, they do say it's suitable for the IS version so I'll probably go for it ,pending an inquiry

I really can't come to terms with Canon charging so much for this, I have an ebay one for another lens I own & have no complaints with it & it only cost $15.00

I've just noticed that the "D" type ring has a hinge on it in order to allow it to fit into a groove on the L version
the "B" type ring by canon & the generic one are one piece & would probably not expand enough to slip past the collar on the "L" lens
I can't even see where the ring might mount on a non "L" version , any ideas?

If you search eBay they do have tripod mount rings with hinges too.

The ring that I have mounts in the depression behind the ring that has the AF/MF button. You just torque it enough and it stays put.

There are two flavors of tripod ring mounts for the Canon macro lenses.

Tripod Ring Mount B - 100mm f/2.8 Macro, MP-E 65mm 1-5x Macro, 180mm f/3.5L Macro

Tripod Ring Mount D - 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro

*note: the 100mm f/2.8 Macro requires a special adapter ring to work with the Tripod Ring Mount B. Something a lot of the generic eBay tripod mount rings dont come with.

*note: there are usually designators at the end of the Tripod Ring Mounts like (B) or (W), this is to indicate the color.

The Tripod Ring Mount D is of the type that has a hinge in the middle so it can open wide to fit its lens. You do not "slip" this type of tripod ring onto the lens like most are installed. Both tripod ring mounts can be used with a few other lenses, so they can do double duty, but the colors often wont match because some of the other lenses they work with are white. The Tripod Ring Mount B is compatible with more lenses I believe.

On a side note, there have been quite a few people who have had some troubles with the generic tripod ring mounts breaking, not tightening down enough, or just otherwise being made not of high quality. Personally when it comes to support gear I never go cheap or generic since the support gear (like tripod ring mounts) is what keeps my photography equipment safe and stable.

I tried searching for "mount ring broken" on POTN and didn't really come up with anything. So some links would really reinforce your point. EDIT: I hope your "For Sale" is not skewing your responses.

All the "broken" are people accidentally dropping their gear.

And I have never had any problems with ANY of my eBay generics-mounts....shutter release and all.
