I have a SmugMug pro account, and also post images on flickr, and sometimes link to those images from my blog or 3rd party forums like POTN. Unfortunately, I'm not getting good SEO results from SmugMug, and have done many of their recommendations to get my site ranked on Google. So, last night I decided to perform a little test and post the same random image to both smugmug (http://photography.m2creativedesign.com/Aerial/Kite-Aerial-Photography/Bristol-Renaissance-Faire/Bristol-Renaissance-Faire-17/839307182_9jKAX-M.jpg) and flickr (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4001/4527883107_e1e962aa38.jpg), and also my blog (http://blog.m2creativedesign.com/2010/04/seo-testing-bristol-renaissance-faire.html) and a few forums (http://ostro.ced.berkeley.edu/~crisr/discuss/comments.php?DiscussionID=2661&page=1#Item_1), to see how the whole SEO thing would shake out.
This post is part of that test. Warning: the image that I chose for this experiment is not from a Canon Camera, so please do not judge based on that. It's an aerial shot, and I don't hang my 5DMKII or 7D from a Kite, yet...
Here is the image on flickr:

Basically, I'm posting this not because you're interested in my Kite photography, but to test the theory of having inbound links to an image, and how it affects the Google rankings for that image and my website, which ultimately affects my business. SmugMug (http://www.smugmug.com) has gotten better at providing SEO tools on their website, but they do not allow a sitemap and other critical SEO functions. Many times, the same images will appear in google search results for the flick and blog copies, but not for SmugMug. Hopefully, I can use the results from this test to optimize my image posting workflow, and learn something about SEO.
Anyone want to share their SEO magic tricks?
