Hi everyone,

I'm new here and new to the vast world of digital cameras and imagery. I am very fascinated by all your pictures and work of art derived from simple touches using PShop.

I am in the market to purchase a new digicam, preferably Canon, and was wondering any suggestions. I don't plan on being a professional photographer, but a simple, high-end camera that will take great quality pictures will do!

Thanks for all your help!

You'll see me lurking around here asking many questions.

How much money do you intend to spend? Do you intend on printing these photo's? If so how big of prints?
The A40 is a good introductory camera. Good bang for the buck. If you are anything like me however you'll buy the A40 and want the G2 or 3 a couple months down the road.

Hi Conk, thanks for your kind and quick response.
I want to spend around $500-600, printing sometimes, just regular size prints? Sorry, I'm so new to printing as well... just want to start with taking good photos first!

COuld you tell me the main differences between the high-end camers and the introductory ones? There are so many and it gets me confused.

How much is the G2 going for?

If you're printing normal(4x6) prints then you don't need to be spending very much money. It really depends on if you want something compact or not. The G2 is probably aroung $600. But it's not very compact(Won't fit you pocket).

Basically the difference between high end and introductory cameras are the features.
The A40 and the compact digitals are great beginner cameras as their features are limited. Basic settings for the beginner to learn. Manual settings such as shutter speed, iso speed, white balance. The A40 at 2.0 mega-pixels will print great photo's at 4x6 and will print 8x10's at 1600x1200 resolution. The larger the photo the noisier.
I know you said you were not interested in printed yet but I believe it is something to consider when buying a new digicam.
The G2 however not so compact is my personal way to go for it's features over compact-ability. 4 million pixels. Sharper photo's and loads of features. The one thing I like about this camera is the hot shoe for external flash and like the A40 you can add lenses and filters.
Depending on your ability to learn the technical aspect of gadgets and it's features the G2 is the way to go in my opinion. The reason being is that you won't outgrow this camera as fast as you will the A40 or any of the compacts.
Good luck and happy hunting and remember, ask the retailer what his return policy is. You may be able to try a camera out for a couple weeks and return it.

hey guys,
thanks everyone for your kind opinions.

Looks like I'll be going down to the nearest CompUSA this Saturday in search for a canon G2, or G3.

I'll let you guys know how it works out for me, thanks!
