I realize people are going to say this or that, and that it's complicated or that each one has its strengths and weaknesses, but if you could have one for totally free and in brand new (unopened) condition, which would you take, the 12mp G9, the 14mp G10 or the 10mp G11?

I ask because I'm thinking of getting one for fun.

Well, it's complicated because each one has its strengths and weaknesses ;)

G11.

What are you going to shoot with it? If you want better low-light performance, go with the G11. If you want the highest resolution, go with the G10.

I second that

I assume that he means that_fox's point.

I trust Michael's reviews at Luminous Landscape.
An article there about a trip to Japan with a G9 and a Leica camera convinced me to buy the G9. (I've owned a Leica M3 and Leica M4P) I was glad I did. I added the grip described in that article and truly enjoyed the camera.
Luminous glowed about the image quality available from the G10. (I didn't buy that one.)
They commented and recommended the G11. I did buy that one. Traded the G9, and I miss it.

I just ordered a G11, but I'm also keeping my G9. Each has it's purpose for me.

I'm really just shooting whatever I see. I don't have a focus and I'm not very talented. I just like taking pictures and love having manual control. I shoot TV most of the time, auto a little (when I'm lazy or when I trust the camera more) AV a little, and full manual when doing HDRs.

I'm also considering the S90, but the G series are about the coolest looking things out there. Call me a sucker, but I totally dig the style and build of the G series. It reminds me of a Jeep in a sense. Just cool, rugged, and quality.

Mike,

I would suggest you take advantage of AEB (auto exposure bracketing) for HDR. Shoot these in Av, and let the camera change the shutter speed for each exposure. This is the recommended process.

I second that_fox's comment, but i guess you allready figured that out.

I can completely relate to your preference for the G11's design, that's what pulled me over the line as well!

is a g9 still worth $200, if it's 100% mint, with the G10 and G11 now out?

:rolleyes:I am keeping my G 9 till i see a major improvement,,,Thats my opinion....G 10 & G 11 have nothing i need,,,,besides i like the extra zoom in the G 9....Ron

Can you elaborate on that? I mean, originally (a couple years back) I wanted the G9, and then thought about the G10, but then the G11 came out, yada yada.

Right now my only point and shoot is an SX110 IS. Is there a major difference in image quality of the smaller sensor point and shoots and the G series?

How how does the G9 stand up to the G10 and 11?

I just got an S90, and will probably be selling my G9. I had two main issues with the G9: (1) too big, and (2) low light capability was not as good as I needed. The S90 has the same sensor as the G11, and is vastly better in low light than my G9. Plus it is much more compact. I would expect the G11 to have much better low light capability than the G9.

Mike ..i don,t own or had the G 10 or G 11 so my exsperance with them is only what i see & hear,,but i have handled both,,& have friends who have both,,,G10 is OK but some say too many MP on small sensor,,,G 11 didn,t like the cheap plastic feel of it,,,but did like the twist LCD,,,i can,t comment on IQ,,,,Ron

G9 still worth hanging onto for the video format, especially the time lapse options. As long as you can avoid going over ISO 400, it's a pretty sweet little camera.

Yeah...but having a hot shoe for creative lighting is nice and most of all the lens zoom range of the G9 will never again be seen on a G (I bet). So it compliments the S90's range.

Thus I am keeping mine...along with the "wifes" S90 I bought for her.

 I like your Jeep comment, and it gets me to some good places to get some good exposures! and.....I bring along my G10 on all my outings to compliment my XTI.
