Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or Canon 100mm f2.8? I will be fairly close to the action.

I would suggest going further away from the action to stay safe, unless you are behind a solid object. Not to say there's bad drivers, just anything can happen.
That being said, I would use the 100mm f/2.8.
