Hi Jill,

Looking for comments like....

...OK for a beginner!
...has some potential, composition not too bad
...would benefit from Photoshop!
...colours are OK
...tripod needed

:)

I am a very beginner, and just started getting into digital photography...any comments welcome!

OK, this is what I think but I am not a professional....

First off, I'm a bird lover. We have an African Grey that keeps us constantly entertained.

Good composition on all but the shot with his head turned. I'd probably not use that one at all. My favorite was the 2 together, heads turned and one showing his back. It really shows off his blue. I like the closeups and the full view, the full view shows how big he is.

I would probably try to shoot when it's cloudier, you'll get better color. These blue & golds are beautiful birds and an editing program would be great to boost the saturation.

Hope this helps, isn't it fun!!?? Are they your birds??

I go there 2-3 times a week with my Season Ticket. Unfortunately, the performance area where the Parrots are I couldn't get to as was packed out with school kids and then, because I'd used my pass to get into that aerea once, I couldn't get back in without paying :(

Anyway, to my eyes, three of them are out of focus or probably handshake. The only one I really think is OK is the 'Longleat UK parrot couple'. That one, and one of the others, could be rescued in Photoshop, or similar, just sharpened up and contrast adjusted.

These birds are real characters and I'd want to capture that in them.

Thank you for the comments. I will try to use Photoshop, it may save a few of them. Jill, unusually for England, there wasn't a single cloud in the skies last Saturday, and the photos were taken at midday. I wish they were my birds, they belong to the Longleat park in England.
Handshake is due to the 3.5year old with us being scared of these beauties, wanting to leave the place, and making me rush into it. Well, that's my excuse anyway :) As you may have guessed, we could not make it to the show either, which I really wanted to see, as a similar one in Cairns in North East Australia was spectacular. We will definetely go back again...

1. Ara ararauna Blue and Gold Macaw
2. Ara ararauna Blue and Gold Macaw
3. Blue and Gold (L) and Hybrid possibly Ara ararauna x Ara macao(Scarlet) or Ara chloroptera(Green-Wing)(R)
4. Ara militaris Military Macaw
5. Hybrid possibly Ara ararauna x Ara macao(Scarlet) or Ara chloroptera(Green-Wing)(R)

The hybrids may even be Blue and Gold x Military, with those dark upper mandibles.

Here is a picture of my bird (http://plan-b.smugmug.com/photos/14551050-L.jpg), Penny. She is a Blue and Gold/Green-Wing hybrid. Notice the light upper mandible.

That is a pretty bird!! She looks young, too. I got our African Grey when he was a baby and he'll be 3 yrs old in August. He's a good talker.

Penny is not always well spoken, she knows at least 50 phrases, but associates phrases with the right activity. African Greys are well known for this trait. Penny is young for a parrot. She's 18. With proper care, she may outlive me (I'm 33). Is your grey a Congo, or the smaller Timneh?

He's a Congo and he says things in context, too. It amazes me. They are smart.

The reason I started my website was to show videos of him. You should check him out! I'm going to be posting some more as soon as I can. His name is Oliver and you just go to "videos".

Good website Jill. I have already looked at a few of Oliver's videos. He is very vocal, and knows a lot of things. Very clever!

Luvmyparrot!,

The African Greys are VERY GOOD talkers. We have one that just turned three and his vocabulary is well in to the hundreds. He's a riot!

I've got videos of him talking on my site. I started the site to show the videos and it's turned in to also sharing photos with friends and family. I'm going to try and get some more video of him soon. It's kinda hard to film as he will shut up and watch me instead of talking. Greys live to be around 50 years old and they are the best talkers in the parrot family. The red tail is beautiful against the grey. Can you tell I'm partial to Greys??

Anyway, good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Although the parrots are not so extraordinary, the frame you have chosen for them and the gallery page layout is fantastic.

Hi,

I haven't paid for dpetc.com yet. I have only registered a couple of months ago. They have free trial offer on. I'm quite happy so far, would recommend

I have signed up as well. They are quite new, but they have the simplest interface I've ever seen. I'm a member now for 1 year.

Love the pictures.. Compostion is excelent. I'm not sure if the pictures lost something when they were resized but I would personally up the contrast a little and lower the brightness. Seems to be a little bit of haze. Otherwise perfect pics.

I bought a yearly package for about 25 $. It will roughly hold about 1500 photos I guess. There's not much people yet but it's very easy to use.For example, you don't have to bother with deleting original files to save space, it asks you while you upload them. And things like this. It's cool. I recommend it as well.

Hi Nidz,

Thanks for your kind comments. I will try the contrast. I reckon the haze is due to the x14 digital zoom :)
