(edited... as per 2nd post, i think the 100-400 might be a 'red herring')

hi,

ive seen similar threads here, but wondered if anyone had used a
GT2541 or GT2540T with the 100-400L.

my understanding is that both are up to 300mm, the traveller will do 8kg the mountaineer 12kg - i was thinking the 100-400L is quite 'light', so should be ok...

other than that, i guess mostly its going to be used for wide angle panorama (12-24) and use on with 150 macro. all with the 7D.

i realize its all a trade off, as a hiker, id much prefer the travallers size, but it needs to be able to cope... no point in carrying around something which cant do the job :)

so it needs to besomething that is stable, yet the lighter & smaller will mean im far more likely to attach it to my backpack :)

thanks for the thoughts

okay, bit more research,
...and now im considerings the GT2541EX

my reasoning actually is following other threads here (and elsewhere) ,
that the 100-400 is unlikely to be on the tripod much...

so probably better to have something more suited to macro, and also 'rough' terrain...

so would probably be mostly used with the sigma 150/2.8 and 12-24

am im mad :) ?

Series 2 tripods are too small for 400mm. It's not the weight, it's the magnifications and the tripod's ability to damp vibration.

For the other two lenses, you would be good with a 1540 if you are worried about weight.

The real bargain, IMO, in Gitzo's line is the 354x. For little additional weight you get a ton more stability and you can use that 400mm lens.

yeah, i guess the thing is trying to get one tripod for all is a problem, if you are concerned about weight.

i'll take a look at the 1540 and 3540, and also have to make a decision on what lens i realistically am going to put on the tripod.
thanks for suggestions
