has anyone used this lens???? i just came across it and it seems amazing. You get image stabilazation, 300mm zoom, 28mm shooting all in one. Its an L lens...it would satisfy 95% of the shooting i do without ever having to change lenses.....hmmmmmm

Pretty good reviews. Is this lens still being made? I don't seem to hear about it too often.
I don't care for the variable aperture at this price point, preferring the flexibility of a fast lens across the zoom range, but then that's why I bought the Sigma f2.8 120-300mm EX HSM IF APO. Plus, this Canon has a push-pull zoom (as does the 100-400 L) and some folks don't like this, as they claim it sucks dust into the lens and camera. That's another reason why I bought the Sigma: it has an internal focus mechanism (the lens doesn't change length when focusing and zooming).

The 28-300 replaces the old 35-350L. I owned it for a while and hardly used it. It just didn't have the sharpness of many of my other lenses, and rarely was I in a position where I neded that much range.
I think the lens is popular with photojournalists who aren't primarily concerned with sharpness, and don't know how much lens they're going to need for a given situation.

i was too thinking of getting this lens. BUT, i have my doubts, I think i rather buy a 24-70L, 70-200L, and when the money comes around, the 100-400L (shooting with a 20D,) the 10-22 and i think i would be SET.
The 28-300 really ate away at my brain for a while, but I like very sharp images... I heard someone on this forum say... Jack of all trades, master of none. This comment was directed towards the Sigma Bigma (50-500)
I would still love to use the 28-300 to really see what all the fuss is about, If it can compare to the 70-200, i might have to reconsider. Nevertheless, 28-300 f stops are still SLOW!

It's not the fastest, but if you are in bright light. It covers a lot of range and that isn't always a good thing, necessairly.

Yes, I remember the quote well. It was made by someone with no experience of this lens at all: pure ignorance

In a bag for Canon, a photo journalist will have these three main ones:
16-35mm f/2.8L
24-70mm f/2.8L
70-200mm f/2.8L IS
Then the newspaper will usually provide them with a 300 or 400 and/or they get discounts from places to rent them out like a 600mm f/4. :)
