I was just wondering what method you all use to get the "above shot" pictures. Something portable would be great to. :) For the shots where people are laying on the ground, like where all the heads meat at a point and rotate round, I am using a chair and get as close to the subject as I can and I try to lean forward as much as possible to get the shot, but im never centered. Plus im always concerned of falling on the subject. Then I remove the chair in photoshop if its visible in the shot.

Stepladder can get you fairly high, work of the side with a small tele and maybe you won't need to PS the steps.
Scafholding rig if you want to get really high?

Camera on a monopod, prefocus, set the timer and hold it over the subjects.

Tripod held in one hand ( don't own a mono) with shutter release cable no need to pre focus - auto works

Good point about AF, assuming you have a release cable. Also it is much easier with the release cable because you can fire off multiple shots in a much quicker timeframe. I normally do this with Pocket Wizards but was not sure if release cables or wireless options were available to the OP.

Other option would be shoot useing a USB cable to laptop u can then see where your aiming as well
