I may be getting this lens as part of a trade, if it goes through, and it would be great if anyone who owns it would post some images they have made with it..... please :)

I just got one yesterday (sold my EF 50 1.4, which I found soft above f2.0, to fund it), so Iīll be posting some pics as soon as have some worth posting...

A quick snap, taken while going home from work yesterday. Composition might not be the most intriguing, but that wasnīt really the goal either. Shot handheld with a Rebel T1i, natural light (overcast), f2.8. Full picture Smart sharpened 100 %, 0.3 radius, 100 % crop sharpened 100 %, 0.8 radius.

Softness of the petals surrounding the white center is due to the short DOF.

Would love to see a loosely framed or waist up portrait with this lens. I know it is a macro lens, but the focal length is PERFECT for a portrait lens on a crop camera.

Nothing fancy, just a quick sharpness test. Shot handheld with pop-up flash. Focus achieved via LiveView (the AF seems a bit inconsistent on my copy, perhaps in need of adjustment).

The full image, smart sharpen 100 %, 0.3 radius:

http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/1139/mg1988full.jpg

100 % crops at f2.0, 2.8 and 4.0, unsharpened:

http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/5508/mg1986nosharp.jpg

f2.0 is fairly sharp, although contrast is a bit lacking. All-in-all Iīm very happy with my lens, highly recommended as a combination of macro/short tele.

^ I agree...I thought this lens might be more popular. Personally, I like it a lot. A few years ago I had the Tamron 90mm macro which has excellent IQ. As far as I can tell, the 60mm is just as good, but what I like about the 60 over the 90 is that the barrel doesn't extend. Also, working distance does in fact seem to be the same as the 90mm.

ISO 400, f/2.0, 1/125 (not a true 1:1 macro but I just wanted to test for sharpness -- which is slightly degraded due to jpg conversion).

I love the fact that I can use the onboard flash with the tamron 60mm. Not many 1:1 macro lens' out there that allow that. In makes it very easy to get some nice shots in less than ideal lighting.

I can't believe I've never heard of this. I think this is the only EF mount macro lens to have 2.0 aperture - you gain a whole stop and it's not that much more expensive than the Canon...

(Bump) Anyone have any more samples? I might just pick one of these up...

I came across this review (http://www.photocrati.com/tamron-sp-af60mm-f20-di-ii-ld-11-macro-lens-review/) of the lens where the reviewer said that the manual focusing was "jerky and uneven" and it irked him a little bit. Do you find this to be a problem with your copy?

when it comes to portraits i prefer using my 70-200 f/2.8

it's your lucky day rjmcinnis ;)

because i am the guy who wrote the text that was quoted by CR - and i have three of the lenses that show this issue (60 macro, 17-50 VC, 70-200)

i never had any problems with this lense - most of the time i try to use the center af-sensor anyway and if i focus for macros i use MF - the AF will still be able to use you outer af-sensors - but they are only working like line-type sensors (as they would to on any xxxD or the 30D for example)

the tamron 60 macro is a great lense, very sharp (as you can see on my pics) - i would give it a go - and if you think the problem does affect your way of taking pictures, you should probably be able to return the lense

darosk

I agree - 99% of the time when shooting with a dedicated macro lens you're going to be in MF anyway. The fact that nobody noticed this until now I believe shows that nobody found it to be a problem until they started doing some in-depth testing.

The shots coming from this lens have me drooling :D I'm looking to get my first macro lens soon, and have read about the fact that you have to get closer to your subject with the 60mm. In real life, how much closer than say the Tamron 90mm macro would you have to get, a few cm's :?:

msgnighty
27th of November 2010 (Sat), 05:37
the tamron 90 has a working distance of 11 cm (front lens to subjekt) - the 60 macro has a workin distance of 10 cm (front lens to subjekt) - working distances ar imho the best things to be compared when it comes to macrolenses (the tamron 90 macros first lens is for example about 2,5 cm deep inside the housing - so your working distance is even a bit closer (because the housing is even closer to your subject) - the 60 macros first lens is right at the front

ScreamingSwifts
27th of November 2010 (Sat), 05:51

Just one question - in the manual it says you can fine tune the focus when in AF by using the focus ring, but then underneath there is a warning about how using MF when in AF mode it can damage the lens :?: Does anyone know if it is ok or not  Cheers.

Actually, if you order it before December 31, 2010, and get the rebate, the Tamron 60/2 macro is actually cheaper than the Canon 60/2.8 macro, if you also include the cost of a lens hood and an extended warranty for the Canon lens. The Tamron comes with a hood and a 6-year warranty.

No Lens Sample Photo Archive thread for this lens? Can this thread become one?

Would love to see more shots if possible - I am keen on buying the lens, but it is really expensive in the shops here in Australa ($800 AUD). I could import a grey lens for about $450, but if it has focussing issues I would have troubles getting it adjusted.

I wish I could take advantage of the $100 rebate in the USA, but that is not valid for international customers! Anybody got any suggestions on how to get the lens without getting ripped off? Our local prices for lenses are ridiculous...

It's a great lens... it was while it lasted :) I had AF failure after 3 weeks of use, but Tamron is fixing it. Too bad I had to pay for shipping it to them, plus it's been gone for almost 3 weeks now.

I got an email today from Tamron, saying I won a $60 off any lens coupon in their 60 Lenses/60 Days Sweepstakes! I thought that ended way back at the end of October! I guess no one else was that excited just to "win" a coupon for money off! LoL! (they explained to me that if people didn't claim their prize, they kept drawing, until they found someone who did)

I, on the other hand, am thrilled! This lens has a $100 rebate on until April 30th and with my extra $60 off I can get it for $340. WaHoo :)

Looks awesome from the pics posted here, and I can't wait for mine to come.

I've seen some comments about focusing issues with the newer Canon DSLRs.

I'm very keen on this lens as it seems to match the Canon 60mm macro in most aspects and is 1 stop faster. However, I use a Canon 7D and want to make sure there aren't any compatibility issues.

As anyone around here used had any issues using the Tamron it with a 7D ?

msgnighty

just make sure you get a lens with a LensID that is not 37, because this will cause some problems with outer crosstype sensors - if you get one with the ID 37 just send it to tamron and let them do a firmwareupdate - when you get the lens back it will have LensID 137 and will work perfect!

my two shots with the little gecko were taken with the 7D for example

Thanks for the tip.

I've seen the link to the explanation on a previous post

The anoying thing is that if that happens I need to spend more money to send the lend to Tamron, etc.

How do I get the LensID?

Probably not a major issue for you as your center af is the only cross type, but if you have outer cross type af points I don't think they will work properly with that lens ID.

Pretty sure mine is 37 but I doubt I will get it fixed... maybe in the future.

as hardcore said - on a camera where only the center sensor is crosstype you won't notice any difference - but on a 40/50/60/7D you will notice a big difference when you made the update

actually - it doesn't even cost anything as long as you still have a warranty on your lens - just send it to tamron with their service letter thing (pdf on their page) - check what the delivery will cost - write an additional letter and put it in the box where you ask them to refund the money for the delivery to your bank account - worked without any problem for me - got the money faster then the lens actually ;)

why you should update your lens? well - first of all - when it's at tamron anyway you can let them adjust the lens (for my part - i even got a new "plastic window" for the distancescale, because my old one was scratched - BUT i asked them to replace it on warranty (what they did!)) - and the second thing why to do that is, that if you ever plan to either upgrade your body or to sell the lens you will have no problems or get a bit more money - at the moment it takes around 1 week to update the firmware (talking for germany)

From the photozone.de review and other comments it seems diffraction really kicks in at f/16 especially when compared with the Canon 60mm. That suggests the quoted f/2 may be a marketing figure and the real max aperture might be closer to the Canon than most think. No I can't obviously comment as I've never used both.

Have any of you concluded that the f/2 is real? That would be the only reason for me to choose the Tamron as from my experience Canon lenses are a safer bet...

The focusing speed of the canon is definitely much faster. The USM is really fast and quite. Much better than the USM of my 50mm 1.4 (which is slower and noisy). Tamron's AF is okay ... better than the AF of the Tamron 17-50 VC for example. But it's kinda slow and noisy. But accurate.

But nevertheless the Tamron has the much better bokeh (IMHO) ...

if you want to compare them ...

So where do you find this "service letter"
I looked at Tamron site...

So Tamron is admitting there is a problem now?
I thought that Canon had confirmed it, but Tamron was still in the "we'll look into it" phase?

Nice - I especially like the shallow DOF in the second one. Looks like this makes for an excellent portrait lens! Thanks. Yes it is quite good, if you can deal with the AF sometimes being a little screwy. Not quite as smooth as a 50 f/1.4 or 85 f/1.8 for around the same price, but I would rather have the macro option as well.

How did you decide over the Tamron and the Canon 60mm F2.8? How do they compare in AF speed and accuracy? Is the focus ringon the tamron very stiff? I read that manual focusing is not smooth like the canon? is the Tamron AF very noisy?

I have tried a few places today but noone seems to stock the Tamron?

CopperpotPhoto

I have never used the Canon 60mm, but I hear the sharpness is comparable, and I liked the wider aperture although for macro you won't use that much. I hear the Canon has slow AF as well that sometimes chases. The manual focus ring is stiff, but that is a good thing because I think it feels more precise when manual focusing at higher magnification. ( That is the point to making the ring stiff ). Bhphoto.com and Adorama.com stock the Tamron.

Oh snap...great lens!

I know this lens is meant for APS-C sensors, but are any of you guys using this on an APS-H (1D) body?

If yes, what do you think of it? If this works on my 1D, I think I just found my next purchase!

it's your lucky day rjmcinnis ;)

because i am the guy who wrote the text that was quoted by CR - and i have three of the lenses that show this issue (60 macro, 17-50 VC, 70-200)

i never had any problems with this lense - most of the time i try to use the center af-sensor anyway and if i focus for macros i use MF - the AF will still be able to use you outer af-sensors - but they are only working like line-type sensors (as they would to on any xxxD or the 30D for example)

the tamron 60 macro is a great lense, very sharp (as you can see on my pics) - i would give it a go - and if you think the problem does affect your way of taking pictures, you should probably be able to return the lense

How does it compare to the canon 60mm 2.8, i will be using it 50 : 50 macro : portrait and i think the F2 would be a bonus for portrait? how is AF?

there you go

honestly - the canon is faster when it comed to af-speed - but for portraits speed doesnt really matter - accuracy on my tamron is pretty much perfect (very seldom i get missfocused shots but i do get them with my 17-55 as well ones in a while ;))

wo if i had to choose between the tamron and the canon - i would go for the tamron - because you get a amazingly sharp lens even wide open and you wont need a 50 f/1.8 for indoorshots ;)

Just ordered one from Abe's today for $369 shipped (after $100 mail in + code: LOYALTY15). How's the focus ring on it? I played with a friend's 17-50mm and it had a gritty/crunchy feel to it. Is this normal for Tamron lenses? Also, is the auto focus really as slow as some reviews say it is? I like the insect shots and was wondering if this is possible to achieve using autofocus.

The focus ring on mine is smooth and very nice. Perhaps your friend got sand or dust in his? The autofocus is fast and quiet, as long as it doesn't have too far to go. If you switch from close macro to far away, or back, the focus has a long way to go, and it may take a bit of time, especially if it starts off in the wrong direction and has to hunt around. But again, this only happens when switching between extremes.

With the lens wide open (f/2.0) and at short distances, the depth of field is so shallow that I think most people are using manual focus (and a tripod) anyway. But yes it will autofocus. You might find it helpful to use AI Servo (continuous autofocus) mode, even when taking a single picture.

Nothing special, but I like the colors, especially for late November when most everything is brown and gray. Taken this past Thursday (Thanksgiving day), with a Tamron 60mm on EOS 60D. Hand-held, 1/320s f/3.5, autofocused. Straight out of camera and scaled down - no other post-processing.

Would someone who owns this lens mind confirming that it is actually an EF mount and not EF-S (or protrude further than an EF lens) please. I'm looking to purchase one for use on a 40D with an in-body filter (sits in front of the mirror) and that limits the lens choices to EF, even though it's an APS-C sensor.
Thanks.

I'm having the same problem after not using it for a long time. I have a Canon 60mm arriving tomorrow and I'll be throwing the Tamron onto Craigslist as soon as it comes back from being repaired.
