Problems with focusing on stringed instruments

In particular electric guitars and acoustic guitars.

How do you get all the strings, particularly the thin strings x3 bottom half of the bar?

Do I have to use manual focusing to get the strings in focus?

If you are shooting from a concert/photo pit distance and you focus on the body of the guitar, the strings should still be in focus. Though I have a feeling this may not be what you are asking..
