How many folks out there simply "have to have" their camera with them nearly all the time just in case that great shot comes?

No ... I never carry mine around like that. All my shooting is planned. Depends on your subject matter interests. When I'm travelling I would carry it, or a smaller P&S.

i used to have to plan, as i had a lot of kit however, since using a Canon Pro1 I do have it with me 90% of the time

I carry my camera with me very often (e.g. when I go out for a walk with my kids) but I don't really count on anything spectacular happening.

Guess I just take my kids out for a walk to get some pictures, really

Best regards,
Andy

I would like to take my camera with me, but living in the US and driving a camaro (without tint) does not help my cause. Maybe when I move back to the UAE (in 5 months), I will always keep it in my car, sometimes you do not predict on that beautiful sunset over the ocean, bouncing the pretty orang'ish red glow over the clouds. I guess in that case I would keep my tripod in the car too, and maybe my monopod....my car is gonna get pretty heavy lol

Guilty.

I take my camera just about everywhere...

I carry mine with me all the time just for this reason, I would really regret missing some sort of rare event on my 6 mile drive home from work :D The only drawback that I have is leaving my camera in my car on 90 degree days, it can't be good for it.

Unless I'm going out specifically to take pictures with my 300D, I often take my Olympus 720 along just in case I witness something I want to photograph.

To me, going out without a camera is rather like not having my mobile phone with me in case of an emergency.

Regards, David :)

i always carry mine with me! it's always in my car, you know for that just in case stuff...i live pretty close to the expressway and chicago, so if i hear something on the radio, or my police scanner i don't have to worry about where i put my camera and all the parts. i also live pretty close to a hot air baloon launch, and a few small airports that do skydiving, so yes-its always by my side. you never know, especially in the time we are now, when you will have that one shot....;)

I'm guilty and it drives those around me nuts :(

HOWEVER - I solved it a bit with the new cell phone (Sony Ericsson S710a) that has a pretty nice camera on it. I actually think it's a camera with a phone rather than a phone with a camera lol. No one blinks twice about me carrying my "cell phone *wink*wink*" around with me so I'm able to function a bit more normally now ;)

PicOlio, do not let others steer you away from always carrying your camera or steer you away from anything that brings you joy (unless you are hurting others :P). Because when that " photo of the year" passes along and you are carrying your SE (what is it? 2.0mp lol?), those ppl who "drive you nuts" will not compensate for your loss of not taking that shot. They wont run up to you with a 1DsMkII w/ a 70-200 f/2.8 IS L and say here you go your majesty, please take that shot. Cell phone cams or cams with a cell phone built in are cool and all, but some shots need an SLR ;)
go for it!

It's great to hear the variety of responses. Although I've only had my camera for two weeks, I found I like having it around. Gosh, does that make me co-dependent? LOL

Since I got my Trekker bag I'm carrying my SLR around a lot more but often have my IXUS in my pocket - just in case.... and finally theres my D500 phone...

Now when I get some bigger lenses... it might be different!

I am fanatical about taking my camera with me when I leave the house (at least that's what girlfriend says). When I go to work, I put the camera in my briefcase, which is really a nice leather bag normally used for laptops and a small portable printer.
The only drawback that I have is leaving my camera in my car on 90 degree days, it can't be good for it.
This concerned me too. So if I have to leave my camera in the car for a few hours, I put my camera bag inside a cooler in my trunk. The insulation of the cooler is more than enough to keep my equipment from getting too hot.

This is actually a pretty good tip. Thanks for sharing!

The small Ixus is always with me, unless I'm on vacation (in that case it sits in its UW housing). Very ofted one of the two DSLRs are with me.

I had my friends camera in the back of my car, when I was involved in a car crash which destroyed my car. The photos I took of the accident scene immediatly after the crash were probably what won me the ensuing court case when they refused to buy me a new car. So yeah, I do carry my camera everywhere.
