I just bought my Rebel XT and love the way it shoots and feels, especially with the vertical grip attached. The one thing that I have been disappointed with is the numbering system when I download the pictures from my camera to the computer. Everytime I download, the files start with "Picture 001" as opposed to using continuous numbers.

I have made sure that I am using the "continuous" mode for numbering within the Tools 1 tab of the camera's menu.

Can someone help me out? How do you all download pictures from your camera? I haven't used the accompanying software to download. Will that help?

Card reader and Adobe Bridge to rename and download at once.

Lots of us here use card readers. They are often faster than downloading from a camera and don't use any battery power. A decent USB2 card reader will set you back $10 to $20.

Personally I use plain old Windows Explorer to pull the photos off the card and onto my hard drive. I then use irfanview (freeware from www.irfanview.com) to quickly browse through the images and cull the crappy ones. I also use Picassa 2 (freeware from Google) to archive and print photos.

Not sure why you are having the picture 001 issue as you said you've turned off the file number reset thing. It's most likely though that the software you are using is renumber as it offloads them. Canon usually use IMG_0001.jpg for the standard file name format so picture 001 definitely means something has been changed outside the camera.

if you preview the shots on the camera, you should see the filename as given by the camera. What does it say?

How are you downloading the pictures, and what computer/OS are you using? It can make a difference.

I am using Windows XP as my OS. The way I download the pictures is by connecting the USB cable and then just transferring the files via Windows Explorer. I'm not using any software of any kind.

I don't think this is a card reader or image transfer problem. The camera should continuously number the images (the 300D does that). And you should be able to see the image number on the preview screen of the camera when you take the image. The only place I have seen the numbering go awry is when I'm shooting via a laptop using direct load to the HD rather than the card. I would suggest you re-verify that you have it set to continuous numbering in the camera.

Oh, and I load to my laptop - it has built in card readers - then transfer to the desktop via our home network when I get a chance. That also gives me two copies of the raw image on separate systems until I can get an external backup (CD/DVD).

The XT has the same numbering format as the other EOS cameras, and i've never had a file renamed to "picture" anything. The filenames are using IMG_1234.jpg, _MG_1234.jpg, or CRW_1234.CR2. If you don't like those names use DIM from http://alanlight.com and a card reader to name them whatever you like automagically.

Kennyahn, it sounds like your using the picture and fx wizard to download the pics. I believe that is how it names them as i know this through personal experience. install and suse the Canon software to download the pics. Its easy to use and doesnt mess with the file names.

As Cr8or said, it's because you're using the Windows built-in tools. Remember - just because the computer comes with an application doesn't mean that it's the best alternative out there. If/when you start using RAW, you'll need ot use something other than Microsoft's tools, since they don't realize that CR2 files are pictures and won't transfer them.

If you are using window's Scanner and Camera Wizard then it will rename the picture.
