View Full Version : Basic tips for new models?

Usually if I have a model who is new to modeling I'll give her some basics like 'never keep your shoulders parallel with your hips' or 'try to stay up on your heels', things like this when they really have no idea how to pose.

I've searched google and youtube extensively for basic modeling guidelines and haven't been able to find anything worthwhile. Are there any good guides available? If not, with enough tips from here perhaps I could put something together.

Although definitely a good read it's not quite what I'm looking for. I'm looking more for an article that is geared toward the model, rather than the photographer.

Perhaps I should have been more specific in why I'm requesting this. I work with so many models on modelmayhem that come in and have absolutely no idea what to do. If I had some basics I could share with them prior to the shoot I think that it would make things flow much more smoothly.

the lumitouch.com article is exactly what you want then...

You want to be able to direct the model to the best posing possibly for their body structure and clothing so that you can capture the best image possible.

Relying on the model to do the posing for you, won't work b/c you'll never get what you want.

Asking the model if they have a specific look in mind or something they are hoping to achieve works but modify and direct the model into position so you make that image they want for them.

I agree about the lumitouch.com article for models to read up as well. Models must know the same rules about good posing just as photographers do.

If you're photographing a model (i.e. someone who is stunningly beautiful) I would make a point to explore many angles and possibilities and not constrain yourself to rules intended for non-models.

I created my own folder with photographs of various models in various poses, so I can show a model what works and why.

You may want to check out the last two articles on my site here http://www.stockphotosarizona.com/articles.html

Have Fun,

Yes, Benji's rules for portraiture is a great read (and those who like that, don't overlook the rest of that site, http://lumitouch.com/benstudiotutorial/index.html). But if you're more into shooting fashion/glamour (as I assume you are by posting in this forum) these might not be the best tips. I haven't really seen any good tutorials on the web, but I can recommend two books: Billy Pegram's "Posing Techniques for Model Portfolios" and Rolando Gomez' "Posing Techniques for Glamour Photography". Rolando's book in particular breaks down a models "assets" and gives you great ideas about how to pose them in a flattering manner.

Guides are just that, guides and they don't always apply to every model.
Shouldn't you be directing the model anyway?

Just ordered Rolando Gomez' book. I've seen it in PDF and it looks great, but a hard copy is a lot more easy to read. It should arrive by the end of the week.

Although good for portraits, bad for Fashion, Editiorial and Nudes or FEN.

Three things you need to do from my experience....

1. TELL THEM TO STOP POSING! They should be acting and getting into character. Models seem to think its about poses, it's not. If they are not willing to act, then they won't be able to convey anything but Zoolander or smile in a pose. They need to tell a story/emotion. Newbies always look good when the camera is off them and do the Zoolander as soon as you point it at them. Some of my best models could really get into character.

2. Collect idea and posing pictures. See... http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=9628698&postcount=3

3. Experience will give you lots of rules that aren't in any books. I guess I should write one since I'm an Expert (Expert is anyone who is at least 5 min away from their spouse). Like ....

Many of the portrait rules are broken in the FEN.

A lot of rules are different depending on the person, equipment being used, etc.

Make them do things.
-"swimg your amrs like an ape .. but with your hands on a golf club ... while pushing your breast together ... and turn to smack someone ... etc.

Make them convey a story.
-think of someone who betrayed you to the core

Watch hands! Un tense them otherwise they look manly. They get big and lighter fast - closer to camera and light source. I almost always darken in pp.

70mm-100mm is more flatering to the face since it compresses

Do the Tira pain posing thing. Look it up on ANTM.

For tuff models you need to push them to pose like a baby sometimes. I've made stupid noises on many occations.

Oh, I conspired with their escort in secret a couple of times to say something during the shoot that would piss them off or confuse them or something.
