A friend of mine was at a wedding recently and noticed the photographer appeared to have something that looked like a laser pointing device with a bluish-white beam that he was aiming at the brides gown prior to shooting. This was in a dimly lit church and the only thing between us we could figure out is that he was using the laser spot as an aid in focusing. Does this sound like what he was doing or could it be something else ? Nifty idea if it was for focusing, as long as it stays away from eye level.

I would think it sounds like a laser or fibre optic light meter maybe ?

I've never heard of anything like this. Could it be a distance measuring device?

A laser, being a point bright source is ideal for focusing. I've used a red laser extensively to focus in pretty much total darkness. Vivitars don't have AF assist beam.

Maybe he's using a near UV or IR laser... But dollar store red lasers work just as well
