I got a lot of work to do, and a lot to learn but her is some stuff that I felt is worthy.

the self portrait is really cool (although I'm not a fan of smoking, personally). the cigar smoke makes the shot, I think, but your ear seems a little soft... maybe slightly more depth of field?
the shot of your girlfriend has the deer in the headlights look about it... the surprised expression, and washed out from the flash with the harsh shadow behind her. get a more natural expression on her and back off the flash some

Nice lookin' stogie you've got there......cuban? Pretty girl too, but agree she looks startled and the flash blows her out too much. Just thought also that your self portrait would look great b&w, give it a shot and post it!

The second shot has all the characteristics of the inconsistency of Flash output from the 10D
Mine anyway-I often got this washed out effect with the 550ex on 10D (Do you have a 550ex?)
and had to reduce the power output by up to 2.5 notches occasionally
(Never happens with my 1D Mk2)
If you can get a stofen diffuser and angle the flash up (Specially if there is a low white ceiling) that will soften the flash effect somewhat
As for Expression, thats her isnt it??
You can see alot worse in 'Hello' or similar

Keep shooting that girl. What beautiful eyes she has. Hopefully she has the patience to let you do some experimenting on her. When you get one with more flattering lighting and without the background shadow, I want to see it!

I don't smoke much on this night my best friend got engaged. As far as the deer in head lights, she has those great big eyes. and the wash out was my falt or the 10D, yeah the 10D, but I tried to fix it but she does have very fair skin. THe lighting was terrible.

The nest thing I buy is going to be the 580EX and hopefully it will solve a lot of problems

wish I had the original. Coming out a touch to red when converted for srgb and SFW. Anyway you'll get the point.
