I am experimenting with macro and can see from some threads that magnification can be increased by using lenses reversed. Can anyone tell me please if I can use some zoom lenses in that way that I used previously with my film EOS500. they are EF 75-300 1:4-5.6 11 and a 28 -80 both ultrasonic, and If they can't, can I use them with a Canon DSLR which is my next option. I know the G5 is old hat now but I would appreciate any replies.
Thanks

Its much better to use primes rather than zooms. Zooms introduce too many variables into macro focus, I have used a G3 with a lens adaptor reversing ring and a 50mm prime, this gives something like 40 diopters of magnification and the only way to focus is with a tripod moving the whole setup backwards and forwards to focus.

It is possible and I have heard of people getting good results with reversed wide zooms on DSLRs. Like Gordon I have used a 50mm reversed on my G11 and the magnification is very good, but the working distance is quite close. Using the wide zoom will get you even closer, but it will be at the expense of working distance and it can be a problem getting light on the subject. But it really depends on how close you want to go; if you only need around life size I have had a lot of success with simple, high quality, achromatic close up lenses. Going to the DSLR will work, but the depth of field you will be getting will be very shallow, which is one of the main reasons for me getting a G11. If you do go the reversed route, investing in a decent focusing rack will be a good buy, you can then make micro adjustments to the focusing and you can also stack your pictures to improve the depth of field.

I've ordered a lens adapter tube and will have a go and experiment with the lenses I have, if its not successful I'll have to try something else.
I am trying as a matter of principle to acheive good results as cheaply as possible, the lens adapter costs £4.99 including vat and postage, you can't get much cheaper than that.
So here goes and I'll let you know the outcome.
Thanks for the help

you guys should really look into raynox 150 and 250 lens diopters. they are the solution when working with macro
