I went Heron hunting today and look what I shot! Of course, its nothing compared to CDS's Heron shots, but I'm working on it. Please tell me what you think!
This is a 100% crop.

He finally had enough of me shooting him.

Thank you both... I was very lucky to get that shot too. He just stood there as I crept closer and closer shooting the whole way. He took off when I got about 15 feet away from him. I barely had time to think about it, I just pointed the camera at him and shot it, it was the only shot I got of him flying.

Nice capturea Chris. I've been trying to get a good flight shot from some time. I'm still looking.

Man the ones I've seen around here won't let you get within 50 yards much less 15 feet!
Very Nice shots!

I was at a public park here in Newport News, VA. I'm sure they are used to people, but I had been trying to get close to one for several days and couldn't do better than 50 feet or so until yesterday. You definately have to move slowly.

Nice heron series WhiteFrog! I have yet to get a nice GBH shot in my files. They are just too shy.

Beautifull shots!
Certainly NOT "nothing" .. these are superb :)
That's one of the best shots I've seen of the "sunbathing" trick they do.. and I love the first shot.. it's about 95% of the way to "perfect" (the 5% being the very hard to control angle of the sun  )
And yes.. the last shot has a wonderfull artistic flare.. very nice!

This exactly how I get my Heron shots. you can go out to "the wilds" but you'll not likely get that close.
You do need to "stalk" though.. moving very very slowly and trying to act like your minding your business :)

Thanks for the compliments CDS. Of course I was inspired and striving towoards shots like yours. And the more I look at these the more I like them.
Unfortunately I missed a couple of shots where he was holding his wings all the way open, kind of like a strech. He only did it when I was walking and not prepared to shoot, and as quickly as I got the camera up he would return to this more relaxed position. A couple of times he started preening when I was up close, but those shots didn't turn out too well. Maybe I'll load them up in CS2 and see if I can fix them up a bit.

I'm guessing it was too late in the day to catch any of them feeding. The first one I saw that day had just caught a fish and swallowed it in the first 3 seconds that I even saw him. Neither Heron was hunting any more after that.
