I have taken photos of tons of Newborns, but when it comes to having my own, I want to make photos even more special. Please show me some of your favorite shots (that you took please) so give me an idea of what I can do. I am a natural light lover.. and would prefer non studio type photos. Also I already have cute Cocoons, and unique hats that I plan on using. I just wanted to get more ideas so I can be prepared. I am due 6/6, but everyone expects me to go a tad early :) TIA!

Here are 2 of my favorites from when my daughter was born last March (2009.) I took both in natural light with my 50 f/1.4. We've got another daughter due mid July this year, so I'll be watching this thread for more ideas! Good luck and congrats!

Click on either to take you to the picture on pbase and you can browse the month she was born for more, and see what you have to look forward to in the first year!

This one is my own hand while I'm holding the camera and shooting at the same time. Natural light from a window to the right.

Congratulations!!! Really that is so exciting! And as a mommy of three myself....you will find that your photography will change after the little one is born...or at least your perspective on photography. LOL :) But just take as many pics as you can....they don't stay little for long.

I agree with pp. Take a lot of shots. Some you will love now and others later when you look back at them. My all time favorite is one that my husband was holding my youngest son with his head in my husbands hand laying his belly on my husband's forarm. You can see my husbands Wedding ring as well. I will try to figure out how to post it. I am new here. Just found this site yesterday.

Congrats! I have a 1 and a bit year old and have been constantly photographing him since way early :)

Lots of shots. Thats the important bit.

I have a 580 EXII, on a light stand, bouncing to the roof of my family room - when I'm shooting Dylan, I turn it on in slave mode, pop up my 7D's on board flash and hey presto, permanent room sized softbox :)

do you have a large window in your house that you can use for light? That will be your best friend! indirect, natural light.

Oh maybe you arent understanding me. Im not amature persay :P . I am just looking for unique shots that arent typical studio shots. I am a natural light photographer , that is all i work with. That isnt what I was posting. I was posting because sometimes its easier to work with others children , then your own. I have a 3 year old that I take tons of photos of- but wasnt into photography as much as I am now when she was a newborn- nor had the equiptment.

here are some of my shots of *others*

So im not incapable....I just feel like I may freak out with mine, and not come up with anything good. But if I see other shots- I may be able to come up with a pre plan and not freak out.

Sorry Rebel Chick, I should have known that, as I recognize your name from being around this forum for a long time. I was just having a stupid day. I can't wait to see your newborn shots!!!!

I've never done this shot, but I saw it somewhere and always wanted to try it. Picture a pretty, wooden shelving unit, painted white, that has maybe 4 or 5 twelve inch shelves on it. There was a teddy bear, some books, a toy car, a sailboat, etc. artfully arranged here and there on the shelves. Then in the middle of one of the shelves, was a naked sleeping newborn, on his tummy with his face turned out, arms and feet tucked, butt in the air. His name was spelled out in baby alphabet blocks somewhere else on another shelf, and birth day spelled out in a pyramid of baby blocks in another place. It was the cutest stinkin' thing i've ever seen! Do you have nursery furniture that you might be able to use similarly? Even a chest of drawers, with the a drawer pulled out and the baby on top of a piled of folded clothes, or between a set of bookends on top of it? Or do you have a nice wooden rocking chair you could curl a newborn up on the seat? Or when your 3 year old is fast asleep, could you nestle the sleeping newborn in his/her arms in bed and be a stealth photographer there, with existing light? Maybe keep the door to his room open so a crack of light is illuminating them both, jack up your iso and open your aperature up? Just trying to brainstorm, without filters getting in the way....
