Actually, it was on Sunday that I bought it, alongside a 17-40L.
I have mentioned this purchase a million times before and read a ton of posts so on the train on the way back to mainland China I was like a little boy fiddling with it and attempting to take some photos. Having read and reread posts about the 20D I immediately change the settings to how I wished them and added in some of the custom functions. So, thanks to all those who helped in my decision and thanks to all those who answer the questions I am bound to have in the future. As I am writing this I have images transferring onto my pc ready to play with in Rawshooter!!!
A couple of people asked about the price in HK so here they are.
Canon 20D: 10560HK$ = £781
17-40mmL: 5300HK$ = £392
Sandsik Ultra II 1gb: 710HK$ = £53
Not sure how these compare elsewhere, but they are cheaper than in mainland China. The two shops mentioned here a few times (Wing shing/Manshing) were sold out of the 20D body only, and didn't have any of the memory cards I wanted, but there were plenty more that offered the same prices. There are two options available, one with a Canon warranty and one without, the latter being cheaper. Worth checking out before buying. If anyone needs more details feel free to PM me.
PS. Pictures to follow shortly...:)

I looked in a local camera shop yesterday, just one day after buying one lens. I saw some nice white things on the shelf......they had a red line around them.....it said something like 70-200mm on the side, and maybe also the number 2.8.... but hey....I was just looking!!!

Hi,
You know how much cost the 1D Mark II in Hong Kong ?

Hi.
Not bad prices, although it was a better exchange rate before the pound lost value after the bombings in London - it will probably increase again. Saying that, I didn't use pounds to buy it, I exchanged Chinese cash into HK$.
If you do go to Hong Kong, make sure you leave time to charge it up and take shome shots. This time I had no time, but I will be back again in September.
I must say I have no idea about prices for other bodies or lenses as I didn't want to tempt myself...but as I already said, I have since popped into my local camera shop!! :eyes
A true story:
A while back a parrot (think it is a lovebird) flew into my apartment. I realised that it would be unfair to keep the little thing on its own, so went and got a partner for it. Can this principle be applied to lenses. The 17-40 is awfully lonely!!

Snap the bird and someone will ID it :D
Sounds like that 17-40mm needs a nice Sigma, Tokina or Tamron to lie next to in it's bag

Prices must be high in the UK. Our B&H here in the USA is cheaper than Hong Kong (given the coversion rate), and they can be had from others for $50 to $100 less than B&H on a good day. We also get another $100 off that at the present time due to the rebate here.

Ya know I should have waited till my brother-in-law went to HK, he's always around those parts and I could have had him pick one up for me. You never think of these things till it's too late. I'm sure my 20D is in the mail and I'm looking forward to shooting whatever's in my way. ha ha

as far as i know, there is no international warranty on DSLRs when purchased in HK. Only EF lenses have int'l warranty. But I may be wrong, canon UK may honor the warranty though...

Those from the UK may want to try an Ebay seller such as Ebay ID "urgalaxy". I bought a canon 70-200 2.8 IS and was very pleased at the price... My first ever big purchase like this from Hong Kong but I paid no VAT or duty.
It was similar to this one.

I'm with the posts who claim our status of "rip off Britain"... everything is too much here.

I just had a trip to Hong Kong, and came back with some new toys...
(Exchange rates as of 1 month ago, UK prices at Warehouse Express)
17-85 IS = HK$4300 = GBP 309 --- UK Price = 452
10-22 EF-S = HK$4980 = GBP 360 --- UK Price = 524
28 f/1.8 = HK$3250 = GBP 230 --- UK Price = 324
Needless to say... I was sweating a little when walking through the green channel at customs on the way back!!

After Bokeh'ed mentioned that only the lenses bought in HK have an international warranty I looked into it and he is right.
My 20D only has a 2 year local warranty. The lens has a 1 year international warranty. No problems for me as I live close by, but maybe an issues for others buying here to take home - and also buying off of ebay. From the response I got from Canon HK, it seems that it will not be honoured in the UK - I'll try an email them and see if this is true.
I am going crazy right now as I have had no time to play with my new toys. Even today, the weekend, I must work.........Sunday I am free though!!!

also, please keep the shop receipts, as their terms and conditions mention that receipt and valid stamped warranty card is required for warranty repairs...
cheers.

In China the prices are:
20D 11130RMB = £788
17-40mm 6050RMB = £428
A bit of a saving and also they come with a proper warranty. I was a little wary of some of the shops in China. I will buy lenses here in the future, but prefered to get the body in HK. There is actually a good shop in th city I live which stocks lots of good stuff, and also an over priced Canon show room with a fat 1200mm lens.

From recommendations I first headed to Wing Shing and Manshing, two sister shops in Mong Kok. Take a look here for their addresses and a map. http://www.bubbachan.com/photoshopHK/shophk.htm#SEEMINGLY%20REPUTABLE%20HK%20PHOTO%20DE ALERS
These shops were packed and I found the staff to be rude. They didn't have the 20D body only and when I said I didn't want the kit he just moved on to the next customer even though I wanted to ask about lenses and other stuff. This is kind of the experience in many camera and electronic shops in HK though.
After that I walked about looking in many shops and asking the prices. Most were similiar, but one gave low prices straight away and tried to help me - and not too much of a hard sell!!
This place was called Citicall. This is a change of stores, and they all qouted different prices. The one I bought from is at 74-78 Sai Yeung Choi - opposite Wing Shing - so you can use the same map from the link I gave.
To be honest, I am not sure if this is a reputable store, but they gave me low prices, didn't try and sell the imported version with no warranty, stamped the warranty without any problems and was the best I found after looking in over 20 stores.
Looking on various sites and forums people all recommend different places, so head to the places I mentioned and maybe pop into a few other places nearby to compare prices. Mong Kok is the best place in my opinion, and I would advise to stay away from the stores in Tsim Sha Tsui - the main area in Kowloon.
Hope this help.
Now I still need to take some pics and get away from this damn pc.

I'd like to jump in and add a recommendation of my own here if nobody minds... http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif
I was staying in Central district, and had a look at the shops on Stanley Street. When I arrived in my hotel I called 2 dealers, Scientific Photo and Kinefoto to ask for prices for the lenses I was interested in. Scientific Photo were quite short with me, and really wanted me off the phone. I wouldn't say they were rude, just not really interested.
When I called Kinefoto, the guy there was very helpful, and went through the prices with me. He stayed on the phone until I was happy, and I just got a good impression of the shop.
It got even better when I went round to the shop. I explained that I wasn't sure which of the lenses I wanted to buy, but I was definately going to buy 3 lenses... He allowed me to try the 17-85, 10-22, 50 f/1.4 and 28 f/1.8 on my camera, and take test shots with them... He even helped me swap lenses... I bought the 17-85 on the spot, and explained that I wanted a look at the test shots on my laptop, and that I would come back later. He was ok with this, and the next day I went back and bought the 10-22 and 28 f/1.8.
I also had a look in Wing Shing and Man Shing, and found them to be impatient and quite rude. My understanding is that the Kinefoto experience is rare in Hong Kong. The address and phone number for Kinefoto are also on the BubbaChan page sixshot mentioned.
I think I probably paid 2% or 3% more than Mong Kok prices, but the friendly experience was worth it in my opinion.

I don't know if they offer this... I'd be surprised if they did though.
You could give them a call to check this I suppose... (852) 2523-2087
They close at 6pm HK time.

Thanks, scr7b. I actually had bought stuff from Kinefoto before (it was the 420EX flash), but I didn't ask if there was any exchange policy in place back then. Currently, I mostly go to Man Shing or Wing Shing for lenses ONLY because they offer a 7-day exchange policy with reasonable prices (not the best nor the worse). And I agree with the comments made about the rudeness of the salespeople at Man Shing or Wing Shing.

To Contribute. There's a store that sells camera gear and offers good prices in HK. I got three cameras from them my 350D lens kit, a Konica-Minolta A200 and the Fuji S3. The name's New Sankyo. They're very cheap as the guy (peter) gave me the best price right away when I first inquired on the prices. But before you buy ask him if the price he quoted and the item he's giving you is grey market or has Hong Kong warranty. (there's a big difference in the price)
The store's located at the external side of the Holday Inn Golden Mile hotel in Nathan road on Tsim Sha Tsui.

Just returned from my trip to Hong Kong and contrary to others' views, found Wing Shing (Mong Kok district) to be quite professional. They are very busy and I suppose having to deal with tourists who want to save a few bucks can mean they are not given to mucking around. There is always another customer. I ended up buying a Manfrotto monopod and ball head (no lenses...) and did manage to save a few dollars (I saved 35% on prices back home.) when I mentioned the recommendation of this forum!! If you go there, speak to Thomas Leung. Decent bloke.

Glad you had a good experience. In Wing Shing there are so many customers and staff it is hard to always get good service I suppose. I'm heading back to HK in 5 weeks so will check a few places out again while I decide amoung a tripod, flash, memory or maybe a new lens......wait ans see how much I get paid this month!

I've been a HK resident for 1 year now. Kinefoto is a good shop - they also have very good prices on accesories (filters, bags etc).
The Mongkok shops are always extremely crowded (which I guess is a good sign) but dont expect them to spend time on you. They confirmed stock when I called and I realized later on they dont check when you call. Also, the price they quoted was just 50HKD less than the price I paid for the Tamron 28-75 in Central (Scientific Photo). This shopowner had some professionals picking up heavy duty gear and also offered to exchange the lens within a week if I had any issues with it.
The last shop I picked up stuff in HK was a shop in Tsim Tsa Tsui (away from the busy Golden Mile area) inside a mall opposite the mosque - but yesterday, I saw a board outside saying they are 'closing down friday-sunday'. Dont know if they are closing down forever ?? They had the best prices for manfrottos.
hope that helps.....

In HK, normally they will only exchange the defected item within 7 days. But you have to proof it is defected not un-happy about the item.:(

You should refer to the shop "Zhao Xing Guan". It has already moved to Kimberly Hotel, Kimberly Road. It's near the previous shopping centre there.
