I am heading to New York in August. I will be staying at the Fairfield Inn Manhattan/Times Square on 40th St. I am wondering how easy it is to get around NYC. I get to San Francisco and Washington DC quite often and it is a snap to get around there on public transportation. Any insights will be much appreciated. I will be there for 14 days. Combination business and pleasure.

Thanks

I should also add the hotel is not negotiable. The firm I am there consulting for is booking and paying for the trip, so I am stuck. I hope it is a suitable hotel, which I assume it is.

I think NYC is a piece of cake to get around, especially if you're OK with using the subways. You can find a subway map here:

I really have no problem with subways. Is my hotel in a good position for getting around town? I will have 2 weekends and every evening to get around town so I thought it would be a great time.

The last time I was in NYC was before the World Trade Center was even built.

Thanks

Here's google map that overlays the subway system on the city map relative to where you're going to be staying at ("A" marker):

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&q=Fairfield+Inn&sll=40.755742,-73.991997&sspn=0.013361,0.020084&ie=UTF8&split=1&rq=1&ev=zi&radius=0.53&hq=Fairfield+Inn&hnear=&ll=40.755742,-73.991997&spn=0.013361,0.020084&z=16&lci=transit_comp

You can even take a virtual tour of the city by clicking on the yellow stickman in the upper left corner of the map and then dragging and dropping it on one of the streets (start with the street in front of your hotel). The virtual tour is really nice if you want to check out a place to see what's there before you actually get there. :)

I'm from NYC, and your in the perfect location to get around the city, right in midtown. Your in close walking distance to pretty much every train you can jump on to get anywhere in NYC and even the outer boroughs if you wanted to go to the Brooklyn Bridge or Flushing Meadow Park. Although the train system is deeper than other cities, you can't really get lost because almost all the trains go Uptown or Downtown. Since Manhattan is mostly numbered streets (unless your in the downtown area), it's quite easy to figure out if you need to go uptown or downtown.

B&H is on 34th st. and 9th avenue - a must stop. You can spend hours there just trying everything out.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks everyone. Perhaps this is just plain wrong, but I have no intention of going to B&H. Really I am not into shopping, rather order online. Too many other things to spend time doing. It is a working trip, for the most part, but meetings will take up 4 hours per day so I will have a lot of free time during the week and 2 weekends.

B&H isn't really about shopping, but more about being able to try everything out. They have every lens, camera body, tripod/monopod, bag, camcorders, etc. on display for you to try out. There an't many places where you will be able to do that and take your time with it.

Don't feel bad, I live in CT... visit NY fairly often... and have never been to B&H, though I have spent a hideous amount of money with them. :)

I agree too. B&H has more items on display and to try out, but I like shopping at Adorama better. The sales people are much more friendlier and seem to take their time with me. Whereas in B&H, I feel like they just want to push people through and move to the next sale.
