View Full Version : Sell my G10 for an S90 - thoughts?

I like my G10, but I'm finding it still too bulky to be much of a saving over one of my DSLR's for those situations I want to travel light.
The S90 is the first truly pocketable camera I've seen from Canon and appears to offer the key thing I want from a compact - RAW.
Has anyone else made this change or any thoughts on why it would be a good or bad thing?
cheers,
Rob

I just bought a S90 (coming from a G7), it's a pretty good camera but high ISO are still grainy (understandable for a P&S), and video is standard definition (hard to believe for a $350 unit). Now is it worth shelving the G7 for, I'm still not sure.
Pros:
Image quality in daylight or good light is fantastic.
Easy controls for quick adjustments
tons of shooting modes
Small but seems sturdy
RAW!
Cons
Poor flash location
Standard definition video (this still irks me a little though i knew it before buying it)
OK low light shots (Pretty grainy but fixable in PP - if you want to do that for snap shots)
So far so good, I'm going to give it a run this weekend and see how it does.

I just picked up an S90 to complement my G11 and Nikon D300 and I'm really impressed with it's low light capabilities. These night shots were all hand held and I'm not seeing much noise at all.
These are straight out of camera, only resized in Image Shack before uploading. I dunno, I'm quite happy with it.

These dashboard shots (2010 Mazda 3) were taken at around 11pm with only the interior light on.

And a couple daylight macros:

I got an S90 to replace my G9 for the same reasons Rob listed, and have not looked back. The S90 is so much easier to carry for me, and has much better low light capabilities than the G9. The S90 was designed for still photography first (best compact sensor, f/2 lens, RAW), so the video may not be as good as some of the other Canon P&S cameras. I'm OK with that since I don't use the video functions hardly at all.
If you are looking for a true shooter's camera in a small package, the S90 is the way to go IMHO.

1+ agreed completely I've contemplated picking up an s90 too. I played with one and I think low light is excellent for a P&S

thanks guys, I'm pretty well sold on making the change, though I haven't ruled out the Lumix LX3 yet as an alternative to the s90

Keep in mind the difference in zoom ranges between the two. The S90 has more range. Either way, good luck and enjoy your purchase!

The zoom for the S90 is 28-105mm. In the G10, it is 28-140. Unless I am misunderstanding you, it is the G10 that has the longer zoom range.

I think that reference was between the s90 and the Lumix LX3 I'm also considering (the LX3 is onl 24-60 equivalent).

stick with it!
is that based on experience with both or you just like the G10?

Sorry, should have made that clearer! Yes I was comparing the S90 and LX3. The S90 has the greater range.
Cheers!

s90 bought big smile :-)
s90 no worky... flash wont deploy and gives "flash in wrong position restart camera" message ...repowering, taking battery out and back don't fix it...manual says if this happens "you camera may have a problem, contact canon service"
sad face :-( called the retailer and they say they should be able to replace but not a great start/
Ah well it's not like I actually need another camera ;-)
