Just picked up a Manfrotto/Gitzo 058B (or 3051 in the American model number system).

Camera shake simply does not exist with this tripod!

So far, tried a 85mm and 200mm - no need to do mirror lockups or cable release...it just won't move!!! Even 30 sec exposures at f30 - no problems.

My favourite new toy right now. :) :) :)

Do you have a tripod colar for your 200 ? is it the 200mm f2.8 L ?

I've had a 3051 for a couple years now, and agree - it's like a huge rock for stability. I don't think I would want to carry it very far through the woods, though. I use it for my astronomical telescope (a 6" reflector type) as well as for photography, using a small Bogen geared head for the telescope.

Interesting you should mention portability...

I carried it for about 2-3 hours last night, up hill and down dale and because I was stopping every 15 minutes or so to take a shot it didn't seem like that much of a burden - considering all the gear I was carting along with it.

How do people carry such things though? I just used a shoulder strap, and that worked ok. i was wondering how to strap it to my Loewepro backpack - it has cord for tripods, but only mini ones.

If I am going on a day-hike, though, I will generally take my 3021BPRO tripod instead (with a similar strap setup). The 3021BPRO is less than half the weight, and sturdy enough for most work. It isn't the giant rock that the 3051 is, though. The pair can't be beat, in my opinion.

Methinks I'll call my little cousin(s) and ask them to help me with some 'important photographic work' whenever I need a pack mule for the tripod...

:) :) :)
