HI.

Looking at either a Canon 24-70 f 2.8 or a 17-55 F 2.8 IS for a crop sensor camera, for use in G.N. I know there are many users of 40D's and 450 D's that use some sort of the above combonation.

let me Know your views on the above lenses. In this country both lenes are almost the same price.I like the quality build of the 24-70 but like the reviews of optics un the 17-55,and it has I.S,but the build quality I am told is poor-dust issues, plastic body.

So which of the above should I buy for a crop sensor to be used for G.N????

Thanks for any pointers A14

I just recently started jumping into glamour work and rented a 24-70 to use for a couple of group shoots. I never used the 24mm focal length, ever. I even shot inside a house with small rooms and didn't need 24mm. Personally, I'd get the 24-70.

That said, you can get some really cool looking shots for a different perspective if you go wide, so a 17-55 might be useful.

BTW: I shoot crop body (7D). I plan on getting the 24-70 eventually, but am waiting on the supposedly soon to be released IS version to decide on which one to get (new or old version). I actually prefer to use the 70-200 on my 7D even for portraits. Outdoors, you have plenty of space, and you get more creative DOF and less chance of distortion by forcing yourself to step back from the subject.

Indoors, head and head+shoulders+upperbody shots can still be had with the 70mm end of a 70-200.

Well, I have the 24-70 2.8L and would not change for anything else in that focal range. (I am NOT a pro) It is fast, VERY crisp and rugged. I like the flexibility it offers, and IS woth the price tag I think. I have 4 L series lenses. 100mm, the 24-70, 70-200 and the 100-400. I pretty much have the basis covered that way. (I do have other lenses, but those are the main ones)

17-55 is only used with the model is 5 feet away from you, like on a bed in a motel. for everything else, 28 to 70 is the zoom to use, as you can keep the model 10 to 12 feet away.. the distance is important as if you have less than 1/2 inch of DOF then only half the models face can be in focus...

another factory is the 17-55 makes people look fatter if they are further than 6 feet away from ya...
