I'm sure that this has been covered before, but I just can't get the correct search words to find it on the board.
I have a 300D, I have just started shooting RAW images. I bought some larger CF cards to make up for the dismal image storage compared to JPGs. The biggest problem that I have is what gets to my computer. I have three files (or two if I wait forever for the images to process form the CF cards/reader) on the hard disc when I have completely stored the pictures. When the JPG is extracted from the RAW file it (the RAW file) is smaller, and I end up with a "normal" sized RAW file, a smallish JPG and Tiff file in the folder. How do I keep the camera from imbedding the JPG to begin with, becaue the speed which the camera writes the large file is dissapointing? Is this in the camera somewhere, or do I have to use the hack?
Thanks,
Greg

Well, it turns out that the Extreme III are minimally faster than the Ultra II that I am currently using. Maybe I will just use the $200.00 for returning them, and selling the 300D and buy a 20D, which has a larger buffer and an option to ditch the imbedded .JPG.

If I'm not mistaken.. you have to have a jpeg with the 300D ???
Somone corrcect me if I'm wrong.
If you don't care for the jpeg.. perhpas like the 10D,. the 300D might give you size options and at least you can reduce the embedded jpegs size to close to a 1.5 MP file.
This by the way is actually true of All Canon Raw files.. even those cameras that you can turn off jpeg.. or it's a seperate file.. there's actually still one in there.. embedded. They just don't tell you.

Install the hack if you haven't already. It at least allows you to select the size of the embedded JPG. The stock DReb embeds a medium size JPG if I recall correctly.

Really? I'd like to know where or what software I'd need to find that on my 10D.

Really? I'd like to know where or what software I'd need to find that on my 10D.
The Canon EOS Viewer Utility (EVU) on the CD that came with the camera has the ability to strip the JPEG files from the 10D RAW files..
Open a RAW file, then click on "File(F)" on the top bar.. In the drop down menu that appears, choose "Extract and save JPEG"
The size of the JPEG you extract will depend on what you've set it to in C-Fn 08.. Default is Small Fine.

BreezeBrowser will also extract the "hidden/undocumented" jpeg that is embedded in all other Canon RAW files including 1D MkII and 20D's .CR2 files.
I don't know of any other app that will extract these hidden jpegs.

Thanks to all.
Thats kind of dissapointing that even when you turn the JPG off, the camera still imbeds one. Maybe this is due to the camera needing a .JPG to display on the screen. Though it takes longer shooting RAW files to "play" the images when going from one to another, so maybe not.

I'll have to try it. Yep, the JPG size the 300D imbeds is medium sized.
What do you guys archive? Just the RAW files, or do you leave a JPG or TIFF alongside? Is there any advantage to just leaving the JPG alone in the RAW file? Like if I just save the raw files to disc the Canon software will thubnail the JPG when looking for a picture? Like I said earlier, I just started shooting RAW format. I have about 300 images saved, but I am nearing 1,000 files for them, and my work flow has lots of suck in it (which is likely my problem not the software's) and I don't think that I need to be doing everything that I am at this point to save the photos. I have used Canon's sofware, and Raw Shooter's Essentials. RSE is alot faster, but doesn't do anything with the JPG.
So what do you prefer to archive?

The hack will at least allow you to turh the embedded JPG into a small..
I end up with 4 files for each RAW - the original .crw, the .thm (which RSE needs to transfer EXIF data to the converted file, the RSE recipe file .rws and the converted JPG (I see no need to save in TIFF as the .rws file allows you to re-create the file at any time in TIFF)
I transfer and rename the RAW files using the Canon File Viewer Utility as that also automatically moves and renames the .thm file - have tired and failed to find a better program for initial import/rename/save from CF

What I did!
I installed the 300D hack. Changed the RAW+JPEG to RAW only or RAW+smJPEG. This reduces the file size.

The undutchables hack allows you to save only RAW + THM(EXIF info) files with no embedded JPG.
I just transfer the files to my hard drive and work from there.

How did you guys skip the .jpg all together? I loaded the UnDutchables hack, and I can get a small coarse .jpg, but not a RAW only. What am I missing? Thanks.

I have this same issue. Went to the UnD site and downloaded the latest firmware (0.2.3 I think) and it does the same, no RAW only.
