This is great news - I have my order in, and I can't wait.

A couple of notes:

There was some discussion about only making the POTN merchandise available to registered forum members. Has that decision been made?
The red banner just below the Forum header is still referencing the straps and it points to the original strap order page. Should it be changed to point to the POTN Shop?
This is a great forum. Keep it up.

Have Fun,

I happen to have the exact same all-cotton vest (which I paid a bit more for at a retail outlet a year or so ago) - it is well-made, fairly lightweight, and has pockets all over the place. And you can throw it in the washer (after removing all gear from all 21 pockets :) ) and dryer if it gets dirty.

Surely those vest sizes can't be correct!

The smallest one is size Large at 44".

I just noticed the POTN Support Shop link, and went nosin' around. I really kinda' dig the vests but, when I click the drop down menu for colors, it says that the Black is a special order item.

How long would it take to get one of those in an XL (either the $42.00 or $32.00 model)?

Thanks...

Steve

Actually, the vest is long-ish, and extends a few inches below the waist. I got it in X-Large because that is my normal jacket size. But I think that these are a bit oversized and I could have gotten away with a large instead. However, on a cooler day, it will fit well over a heavy sweatshirt so it's probably good that I have this size.

I hope that door didn't suddenly open behind you http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/images/smilies/icon_eek.gif

Special order vests will usually take around 2-3 weeks to ship. I'm ordering a bunch of black Safari vests today because there were a few requests already, and it does look really good with the tan and red embroidery. The camo looks good as well, but it's just too expensive to keep all 30 color/size/vest combinations on hand.

I posted shots of the other two color Safari vests on the website now. Just click the thumbnails for a larger view:

http://www.procameragear.com/potn/vest2.html

Also, I did a bunch of research on these vests before picking them. I went to B&H where they had about 10 different vests on display, and the only vests I felt were clearly better were the $100 Tenba and the $100 Domke. Give the prices, the Safari vest was definitely the best deal. The Combat vest is clearly the cheapest of the bunch, but it is very light and compact, and the nylon fabric would be better on a rainy day.

Some a-hole at Fred Miranda com is ripping off Phil's idea for having customized Op-Tech straps.Well, to be fair, we ripped off the idea too, on this thread here which was started by 4walls. His initial post showed the Nikonian's Op/Tech strap and said that we should get one of our own, but he has since quit and modified his original post. I came on board later, knowing that many projects like this fail, and that I could help make it a success.

I hope no one takes offense to this, but I'm going to go ahead and volunteer to help out with the F.M. project. It will help us in the long run because we'll be able to combine shipping costs on the straps and share shipping supplies, and if they go with the vests and hats as well I can use the same inventory which will also help us keep costs down.

Regarding the vests, I have a batch of black vests on the way that will be ready to ship by the middle of next week.

The sample hats and polo shirt still haven't been done yet, but should be ready any day now that the embroiderer has finished the first batch of vests which will ship in the next day or two.

Phil - since you have the vests handy, how is the fit? I have the X-Large and it is very big, but also very roomy. Perfect for the field. But I'm considering a black one, but I'd like it to be a bit more snug. Are the stated number sizes accurate in your opinion?

pcasciola
29th of July 2005 (Fri), 06:39
Are the stated number sizes accurate in your opinion?I think the sizes are pretty accurate, but if you plan on overstuffing the vest with lenses, t-cons, portable storage device, etc., going one size over like you did is probably a good idea. I'm a 48-50" chest, 38" waist, 5'11", 200 pounds, and the large fits me well which has a stated size of 50", although I think I prefer the X-large for the extra room, which is shown as a 53" chest size.

I just got a batch of black vests in that are going over to the embroiderer today, and I should have them back by the middle of next week.

I'm about a 46-47" chest, and the XL is very, very roomy. It's really a nice field jacket when you're carrying a lot of gear, but things can swing around a bit if you don't stuff it full. You've got a couple more inches of fill, so that might not be a problem for you.

How's the length - does it change much among the sizes? Come to think of it, is the Nylon vest a bit shorter as it seems in the images?

pcasciola
29th of July 2005 (Fri), 20:57
Yes, the length does change from size to size. The large Safari vest is about 1.5" - 2" shorter than the XL, and the Combat vests definitely run smaller and shorter than the Safari vests, since the XL combat vest is about the same length as the large Safari vest, and the chest sizes are 1-2" different for each size as shown on the ordering pages. If you are around my height (5'11") and a 46-47" chest, the large Safari will be a perfect fit. If you are 6'1" or taller, it will probably be a little on the short side.

As long as it is somewhere between 46-52", I "think" an XL Safari Vest would actually work instead of the XXL because they run a little long compared to the Combat vests. I'm 5'11" and the XL hangs down at least 5-6" below my belt, so even for you it should be 1-2" below your belt. Too bad my 6'6" neighbor moved or I'd have him try one on. They definitely run at least one size larger than stated to allow extra room for equipment. If you need to exchange it, you only need to pay the round trip shipping.

I would love to order one of these vests. However I am still wiating for the strap they said was shipped on June 12th! Since all questions about it's whereabouts have gone unanswered, I quess I'll keep waiting.:(
I'm off to Africa for a month as of Oct 1st. Maybe the strap will be here when I get back. I don't really need the strap or the vest as I have a couple of each. Just wanted the purchase and donation to support this excellent forum. I'd still like to see it though.

I did send an email to your qwest email address on 7/21 to let you know the strap was returned as undeliverable but I haven't received any replies. I will forward the details via PM.

Got my vest a few days ago but only had time to try it on field yesterday. Just great, much better that my old fishing one, with bigger pockets. Heck, I even tried to fit the 100-400 and the 70-200 in a couple of pockets and they just did. No hoods and with some effort but they did. Not that I am even thinking about carrying both those big guys always in the pockets (makes the vest definitely heavy) but if needed, I know it can be done. Lovely.

I finally got around to adding the caps, golf shirt and a nice Columbia Sportswear hat to the shop. The first order will be placed next Monday, so any orders received this week will be part of the first batch. The only item I do not have yet is the black golf shirt with red trim, which I thought would be a good alternative since the red trim will match the logo.

http://www.casciola.com/pics/newstuff.jpg

We now have a decent inventory of vests, too, so most sizes of Khaki and Black in the Safari and Combat vests are on hand now, even though some combinations still say special order. Eventually, I will update the ordering page so it's tied into our inventory.

There are also a couple of new Op/Tech items that we are having customized that will be unique to POTN, too. The Op/Tech grip strap and tripod/monopod leg wraps. I'll be starting a poll soon to see which of these are feasible, since the minimum order is 50 of each.

You do see the shipping charges before finalizing the purchase, though. I can probably code around this at some point, but I haven't had much time to work on enhancements this month.

UK shipping on a hat is only $9, but on a vest it's $20 because of the weight.

For those on the fence,.

I received my khaki vest some weeks ago,. and it quickly replaced my old vest, being a far superior product to the one I had been using these last few years...
The old vest was soft in the corners.. the new vest has much better contrast and the USM zipper is three times as fast :)

Now.. I can't wait to see how much better those hats are compared to these old ones I've been wearing...

Sorry about the delay on the shirts and hats. The embroiderer has been super busy and hasn't completed our initial order yet. I know most of the shirts are done, but not the hats as of last Thursday. I'm supposed to be picking up the entire first batch on Tuesday, so barring any more delays on the embroiderer's part, the initial orders will all be shipped later this week and we should have most sizes and colors in stock after that.

There are plenty of vests in stock now, but everyone seems to be ordering the sizes we don't have lately. I have lots of large and XL, as well as some mediums in black and khaki.

no smalls? I guess I'll have to grow a bit first :(

LeoI meant we have a lot of large and x-large, but we still have some smalls, too. The supplier has discontinued small on the Combat vest, but I have one small in each color in the Safari vest (Black, Khaki and Camo). The Combat vests run smaller than the Safari anyway, so a medium Combat is about the same size as a small Safari vest.

Make sure and double check on the chest size though which is the best way to check fitment. Shipping that back from the U.K. would cost you about $20. We haven't had any size complaints yet, though, because they are meant to be a little loose and oversized anyway.

robertwgross
20th of October 2005 (Thu), 15:56
I notice that the size problem still exists from when I mentioned it in July.

Your vests are either small 44" or medium 44" as the smallest ones. Even a 38" is slightly large on me.

---Bob Gross---

pcasciola
20th of October 2005 (Thu), 19:15
Our supplier does offer is an extra small which is a 41" chest, which might be a good fit if a 38" jacket is slightly large. I wear an XL which is 5" larger than my actual chest measurement. The large is 2" larger than my actual chest size, and that feels just a little too snug with the gear in it.

I will get one or two of the extra smalls in with our next order and double check the size and length for you.

Hey Phil.... any new news on my polo shirt and hat order? It has been a long time since I placed my order. Can't wait to start showing them off! Thnx, JonSorry Jon. The embroiderer promised me them in 2-3 weeks, which was about 3 weeks ago, and he has been giving me the runaround ever since. I will at least have all the shirts by Monday or Tuesday, but I'm still not sure if he has completed the hats. In the meantime, I've found a new embroiderer to do the work from now on, and I'll be dropping off some hats, shirts and vests to be done early this week, so there shouldn't be any more extended delays after this first batch finally arrives.

It's been a while since I updated this thread, so I just wanted to let everyone know where we are with this, especially those who have been waiting a while.

After numerous problems and delays with our "former" embroiderer, the shirts are FINALLY here, and we have a few of each size and color on hand.

The hats were dropped off at our new embroiderer last week after the other embroiderer never came through with them. I should almost definitely have them by the end of the week, assuming the new embroiderer is not a flake like the last one.

We have a bunch of vests and straps on hand, although we are running a little low on black straps and a couple of vest sizes.

Navy, green and red straps
Khaki, black, and camo Safari and Combat vests
Sand/Black, Black/Red shirts,
Khaki and Stone caps
Sage Columbia Duck Key hats

We have another batch of black straps being produced by Op/Tech which will be here in about two weeks.

All the hat and shirt backorders have been packaged up and will be shipped first thing Monday morning.

Phil kindly shipped my goodies on November 3rd and so far they still have not arrived! :(

I have two options now...

1. With the advent of the postal service and British Customs, my next order would be better off if you threw it into the Atlantic and I collected it on the beach at Brighton waiting for the tidal flow to bring my goodies to me.

2. Wait for Santa and Rudolf to do their bit!!

On the positive side though, I will enjoy them evem more when they finally arrive hehehehe.....

Phil,
thanks so much for getting the vest off to me quick mate. Man that was fast, like 4 days to get to the other side of the world lol, two days of which were a weekend. I think I could have gone with the XL, this ones got stacks of room to move but I quite like the loser fit anyways. I'm very happy the camo choice is Woodland lol, matches all my current camo gear perfectly. My vest was the only thing not camo before and I get pretty close to the wild life, now I'll have to start using a macro lens as they wont even know I'm there hehehe.

Thanks again mate,
Wayne

Seanbell,
measure yourself round the chest and midrif/waist and then check the size/measurements Phil has on the site. I wear XL and sometimes XXL gear and just got a XXL vest, on me it's very roomy indeed. I would say the XL might be the right size for me but I think in the field with the pockets full the extra room/size will make it alot more comfy and more freedom of movement.

pcasciola
22nd of November 2005 (Tue), 23:09
Definitely go a size larger if you are unsure. I wear XL t-shirts, and while the Large vest fits me based on my chest size, with gear in the pockets it's too tight, so I wear an XL or even an XXL, and I am about 5'11', 48" chest, 38" waist, 220 pounds. I think the best way to fit these is to measure your chest (while taking a deep breath), and add about 4-5" for a little extra room, then compare that against the chest sizes listed.

Glad to hear you are happy with the vest Wayne. I've been getting a lot of positive feedback about the Safari vests. It really is an excellent value, considering the name brand equivalents cost at least double.

Hi Sean. Your vest is almost ready. While the in stock sizes & colors ship in 1-2 days, you ordered one of the size/color combos marked as special order, which usually take 2-3 weeks. It should say that your Paypal receipt I think. Your vest did come in late last week, and just needs to be embroidered and then you'll have it a few days later, probably around the middle of next week at the latest.
