So I am thinking about switching from Bridge to Lightroom. I heard lightroom was a database indexing program. Does that mean changes to the pictures wont alter the original pictures?

Sorry I wasn't specific enough. So changes in Lightroom will not alter the original picture even if its JPG?

Correct. All of your changes are stored in the database, and applied to a new file when you export.

Unless you want it to handle files the same way Bridge does, in creating an XMP sidecar file to go along with each photo instead of storing the editing parameters in the central library.

Not quite Dave. It can create XMP files in addition to the main database, but the database is always assumed to be correct unless you specifically choose to read settings from an xmp file to update the database.

Actually, XMP sidecar files are not created for "each photo" in Adobe Bridge or when exporting from Lightroom.
The edits to rasterized/rendered/bitmapped file formats like JPEG, TIFF, and PSD are written directly to the file header space. XMP sidecar files are only created for RAW formats.

thanks guys I notice there's no option to adjust Saturation. I'd like to adjust both Saturation and Vibrance.
If I want to edit a photo in Adobe Raw. How do I do that?

Saturation's there as well - look in the Basic panel in the Develop module.
If you're looking in the Quick Develop panel in Library, hold down, I think it's the Alt/Opt key, from memory, and Vibrance buttons will change to Saturation.

XMP is only created with raw files. You can also import as DNG and avoid XMP altogether, which is what a lot of "experts" recommend.

XMP sidecars are only created with proprietary raw files because they're undocumented and therefore it would be dangerous to write back to the files themselves.
XMP is a header section in all other file types - JPEG, TIFF, PSD, DNG.
Same applies to all programs - those are the standards for interchangeable metadata laid out in the XMP specification.
