View Full Version : Does G11 have same dust issue as G9/G10?

I have a G9. Had it cleaned once after about 6 months of use. Then 1 month after that cleaning it was worse than ever. I loved the quality of the G9. It fit in my pocket. Had manual control. Awesome.
When dirt got in the second time I was starting to think about replacing it before spending another $150 for a cleaning that could last minutes.
The G10 ended up having similar design issues.
The G11 on the other hand is relatively quiet when it comes to the dust issue. I cannot find a single positive or negative remark concerning the dirt/dust issue. Anyone here have any experience? I would really like to know. Or I go with the S90 or LX3 perhaps.
Thanks.

To be honest I have not had any dust issues with my G9, even though I have taken it to some pretty dusty places. Also the maximum f/stop is f8, so if there is dust chances are that it will have to very bad dust for it to become apparent. I do find that dust is a problem with other DSLR's and something you have to deal with, especially if you take pictures at f/11 and higher ... but for a P&S camera which has the sensor sealed I had thought it would not be an issue. On earlier version where dust was a problem (G7 I think) the only way to "fix" it was to completely replace the sensor assembly. I am not sure if dust is covered by warranty, but it would be worth a try.

never had dust issues with my G10, wasn't aware there was one.

Ditto - and my G10 is subject to benign neglect.

After using the G11 for 6 months and about 3,000 photos, I've had no dust issues at all.

I had dust bunnies living inside my G9 too.
Could it be because you keep it in your pocket? Someone here? uses plastic baggies to keep their camera dust free inside pockets. Ziplock would be good. Might slow the draw down a little though...
I have my fingers crossed with my G11....

I think there are a few factors in play.
It seems the G9/G7 design and tolerances do allow some dust to get inside the camera and near/on the sensor. It also can get sand inside the lens barrel... and particles of whatever on lens elements.
That said, stuff inside the lens may or may not show up in photos. However it can affect the lens zooming eventually.
If you treat the G9 camera as a delicate instrument, you can avoid some but not all of the above. If a person throws it in their backpack... tote it to the beach/windy-beach... and otherwise don't care -- I think it becomes a problem mechanically or in results.

I live in dust. I create dust. When I travel I'm always going into very dusty situations. I "try" to be careful with my G9, and with my G7 before it, but mostly that means washing my hands before bringing it in the shop. I'm either lucky or I'm actually more careful than I think I am, because I haven't seen the problems which others mention.

G9 with dust bunnies...
Mine was treated with great respect. I have the canon fitted leather case for it; it was always in that. It had never been to a beach. My d80 camera was treated the same, or worse. I only had to clean the sensor once in almost 4years. Issue was lint or such on the sensor of the G9.
