Hi guyz,

I found this car photographer, and he is amazing! I'm his fan... in like 2 hours I looked through his portfolio, and I'm truly mesmerized. Really awesome work.

What I cannot understand is how he pulls them of?

Is it HDR? is it Fill flash? is it PP?

only 1 thing I understood, he is using polirizer heavily.

site is http://www.notbland.com/portfolio.htm

I want to learn how to do those photos!

absolutely breathtaking curves, colors, contrast, awesome!!!!!

not all of them! some of those photos have neat light on it... maybe flash + hdr?

I want to try this but my HDR always sucks, looks dull and uninteresting :)

Looks like someone has found a way to apply the "Dave Hill Look" to automotive photography.

No doubt it starts (as does Dave Hill) with the quality of the light. He also seems to pay great amounts of attention to angles, locations and backgrounds.

To me, some look a little "harsh" and "technical" but they're all wicked sharp and really well done.

Is it HDR? is it Fill flash? is it PP? Pick one shot. Analyze it. Then try to put your own spin on it. And don't forget about "late light".

painted layers, apply soft light, fade, dodge and burn, HDR.

and just plain good lighting. most likely large softboxes.

I thought his Carrera GT and Lamborghini shots looked familiar. He posts here on this site occasionally.

yeah, you are right... I was so mesmerized and impressed, I couldn't concentrate... now that I look closer, it seems some good light work, and great timing for "late light" - no but still some of them have PP magic!

I think a combination of knowing the right angles (wide angle and getting close accentuates the hood for example), using the right tools (polarizer) and applying the correct post processing (hdr, contrast & saturation).

so you think images are post process HDR? and not merged from different exposures?

No no, I'm not ruling out multiple exposures (though with that dynamic range, you can probably get it from one exposure). In fact, multiple exposure HDR is just another form of post processing. Just stating that with just HDR, you're usually not done. To me, it's just another way of processing, not a goal in itself. I often combine localized HDR back into one processed version of an image (to keep ghosting away for example).

Can anyone give me example of similar work? and processing?

for example this: http://www.notbland.com/images/chevrolet/c6_corvette_grand_sport_convertible.htm#

4th, it's some awesome light on the car, + HDR? look at the details in shadow, it's absolutely cool!

How would you shoot this?

Why don't you ask him yourself?

hm, I was experimenting with some Photoshop effects, and playing with low pass high pass filter gave me similar results... just the light on my photos isn't so good, hence it's still nowhere near what that guy shoots...
