I couldn't find a lens sample thread for Kenko tubes. Would be great if someone with Kenko would post some examples. I have a 135L and am considering to buy a Kenko for macro shots.

Other tubes from other Brands are also welcomed to post their pictures here. That will definently help those searching for more information about the tubes. If you have experiences with other tubes, it will be helpful if you also write how well their work with their AF and how easy it is to attach the Tube on the Bajonets.

I had 100mm macro usm non is and 85mm 1.8, but sold it to fund for 85L, since i didn't need magnification above 1:2 much. use extension tubes a lot with 85L and 135L, and like the result much more than with the 100mm macro.

The guy you're gonna wanna ask is Mike Reid, aka "SeattleSpeedster". He's the master of the 85L + extension tubes.

Here's my humble attempt to be like him from the other day (85L + 20mm tube):

I have seen that there is several different brands, equal with the Kenko tubes. Since Kenko is just a tube with no glasses, tubes like these should be giving the same result: Soligor tubes (http://www.amazon.com/AF-FOCUS-MACRO-EXTENSION-STACKABLE/dp/B003ILKKG2/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1273476495&sr=8-2-fkmr0) They say that you can still use autofocus on them, wich is what Kenko is giving to. But the price is 100 less.

Anyhow, is there anyone with experience with other brands? Would be great if some of these could be posted here to.

I've got a set of cheap chinese knock-off tubes (can't remember the brand). AF will work, but hunts a bit more. I normally MF macro shots anyway. Aside from AF, air is air and the IQ from all brands that actually mount will be the same. The only thing to be concerned about is the quality of the mounts as you don't want a plastic mount that might break and drop your expensive lens.

Can anyone tell me the working distance with say, a 12mm tube on a 135mm/F2l?

I'm not trying to shoot very small. But I plan on shooting food (for myself) and want to be able to move in a bit closer with my 135mm. But not terribly close. I just need that extra few inches in MFD but don't want to be forced to get so close i'm 3 inches from the plate

I don't know precise MFD, but a single 12mm tube on a 135 isn't going to get you anywhere close to having cream sauce on your front element...

Oh, Kenko ET's, I LOVE them! Well them and my 24-70L. They make a grea pairing.

I don't use the 36mm tube much, I generally find most things in the 12mm or 20mm range just fine. That and the DoF gets razr thin with a 36mm tube, even at f16!

Hmm, interesting. Pro Optic is the same as Opteka/Rokinon/Samyang etc. correct? Adorama has the Pro Optics. Only place that carries Opteka is 47th Street.

one big advantage with the kenko... I can turn my zoom into a macro zoom. The zoom actually made it alot more easy to take macro, than with the 50mm.

This was done with a canon Ef 28-90mm. This was at 44mm.. Pictures was also possible at 28mm, but then the dirt on the lens was just as sharp and visible as the rose itselves. And the autofocus was not working anymore, and with manuel focus even a small touch on the lens made everything blured out.

I'm glad this thread is making a comeback. I actually haven't used mine in nearly a year, but just having them in my bag is good. I'm one of the few who are vocally opposed to the dedicated-macro-lens phenomenon for those who are simply casual macro photographers. Using tubes saves cost and weight in your bag and increases functionality on each lens you own!

I think i might get them!

How does the AF focus range change with 1-3 of them?

I know the minimum focus distance becomes shorter and i've heard that you loose focus at infinity but how much of the long end do you lose?

What's the furthest you can focus or does it vary with each lens?

How sturdy are these? I have read about cases where they get lose and people have had lenses fall off?

I have had my set for quite a few years and while I haven't used them recently they are holding up perfectly and I've never had any durability problems with them. Happy Shooting!

Here is one of mine... Kenko tubes is definently worth the price. Not only the macro option, but also that I can come closer with my 135L is a big thing...

First chance I had to use my extension tubes I bought from another forum member. Not anywhere near the quality of most of you fellow posters but not bad I thought for my 1st try with my 7D+85+36mm.

Man ! You folks are really getting good at using these tubes. I have a set but need to get out & practice with the 70-200MKII. I dont know the best combo to use on the MKII but did try the 12 & 20 at 125mm but i dont know the optimum combo & FL for this lens yet ? I have the 5D MKII but figured using my 60D with the swivel screen plus manual focus & LV 5X on a monopod would be the best route to test.

Regards, ;)

Cheers :)

It was an interesting setup... I was actually working (from home) when I found the spider, I rarely see these so couldn't pass it up. I had a white piece of perspex which I placed on my laptop, I angled the screen down a tad and fired the flash into it... It worked ok though :D

What fstop are you all usually having to use to achieve a dof that allows more than a millimeter of in focus area?

kent andersen
13th of June 2011 (Mon), 15:52
It is tricky with dof with the tubes... I start with f11... and go as close to f20 as possible, but the problem is to keep the speed high enough.

Normaly I focus by moving the camera, and make alot of shots... when I am moving back and forth, at least one of those 20 shot turns out well.

I find the 135L much easier to use with the tubes, on the 50mm or less the area that are sharp is extremly narrow.

WOW! Nice images here guys and gals.... :)

I was thinking about picking up some tubes for my 24-70L... there are a set of cheaper ones at B&H, called Zeikos or something similar... anyone know what makes a tube good or bad? I'm about to buy them.... http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/687477-REG/Zeikos_ZE_CVAFC_AF_Macro_Extension_Tube.html

Well, basicly all tubes creates the same Image quality. It is only filled with air, so there is nothing else there to make impact on the quality.

The differences is...

1. How easy it is to screw them/release them from the bajonett..
2. How well built they are
3. If autofocus works or not
4. If autofocus works, how well is it working.
5. If exif is transfered.
6. The price... you get what you pay for.

Read the reviews on amazon and co... and you will get a good picture from each product...

You will soon find out that you will change the tubes quite often, so the quality of how well it fit with the canon bajonett surely is a buy argument.

Thank you for the informative post Kent. :) I ended up ordering these... http://www.adorama.com/MCAETEOS.html?utm_source=ET&utm_medium=TransactionalEmail&utm_campaign=1point0product

They have metal threads on both ends where it attaches to the camera and lens.. so I thought that was a good starting place for build quality.

Time will tell as they should be here today so I'll have the weekend to play with them. :)

I'll share my result with anyone who is interested. :) Think I would be better off using my 24-70 or my 85 f/1.8 with them?

This must be image stacked as well. How many photos were stacked to get the whole rose in focus?
also, did you use a slide rail?
If so, please include all the info for the browsing people to know what you used including post processing. Otherwise it might be misleading.

Thanks for the kind feedback guys and gals.... Is the thread really for JUST kenko, or are "cheater" brands allowed to post her also? Just curious... lol..

Yes I wanna know too?

I guess, since I started this thread, I take the liberty to answer the question.

I would like to see and hear experiences from other brands to. This thread is made for those that is considering buying tubes. Even though all the other threads are made just for one kind of lens, it makes more sense to put all cind of tubes in one thread. The differences is anyhow never optical, but only the practical usability of the tube. If any moderators disagree, they will surely give their oppinion on it here... I personaly can't see the point in opening another thread with other no-name or known name brands...
