and getting a Rebel the original not the XT.

What are the tradeoffs?

Is the lens that ships with the Rebel really "lesser" being it starts at f3.5 and doesn't have the same amount of "zoom". I probably won't add another lens for quite a while.

Will I need an add on flash (I use the 420ex) with my g6 to elinimate redeye and get more distance, the Rebel doesn't seem to have a redeye problem and throws further.

Will the Rebel perform better in low light with the increased ISO, the G6 works with the flash, but shouldn't the Rebel get me the same type of situations without a flash?

TIA for any further advice or things I have not covered.
The reason for the comtemplation is the Rebel is selling for $640 at butterfly.

I'm a drebel owner, so I don't know much about your G6 lens or your shooting needs. But here are a few recommendations based on what you've mentioned so far:

1. The built-in flash is great by built-in flash standards. But to really take your photography to a new level, I'd recommend a bounce flash. (canon 420ex, sigma dg super, or promaster 7500dx...I have and love the promaster). If you have been satisfied with the built-in on your G6, you'll probably be happy with the higher-positioned flash on the drebel.

2. A great low-light lens that rarely requires flash indoors (with typical lighting) is the canon 50mm 1.8. It beats the drebel kit lens hands down, but it doesn't zoom, which it sounds like you want. A good low-light zoom lens (f/2.8 constant) is going to cost about the same as the body alone.

3. If you haven't already, compare butterfly's price to buydig. At the time I purchased, buydig had a better price.

on edit:
4. I almost forgot...with the 1.6 crop factor of the drebel, the kit lens will produce shots that are actually 1.6x the focal length spec'd on the lens. In other words, it'll actually be a 28-85mm lens. This is true for all lenses attached to aps-c sized cameras. The 50mm mentioned above would operate as an 80mm.

The lens that comes with it is either the EF-S 18-55mm or for a bit more money you can get the 17-85mm IS.

The 18-55 is probably close to about a 3 or 4 times zoom. It's a great lens I think. Nice and wide and gives you a not too bad zoom. The aperture isn't really that big of a deal...unless you shoot indoors a lot with the flash.

the only thing is once you buy the Rebel, you will never have spare money again ;)

Good luck.

Some point-and-shooters rely on the lcd display for live preview and composing their shots. This is not possible with 99% of dslrs. It may take some getting used to if you've had a digital point-and-shoot for a while, but it really forces you to think more about composition when shooting. The only shots you lose are the really low and above-the-head shots, but even these are possible with viewfinder accessories.

I have a G6 and it does a great job. The main advantage of a dReb is low light situations. If you put the Russian hack on it you might get a little faster operation than the G6 - but not much. The G6 lens is 35 to 140 mm equivilent, so you will have a little wider angle but a lot less tele with the Rebel kit lens. And the kit lens can't match the 2.0 aperture of the G6.

Everyone has an opinion and I have one. For me, the dReb is not quite enough jump to switch. I would hold out for an XT. I do think it is enough better to be worthwhile.

One last thing. I like the looks of my G6 but I don't like the cheezy looks of the silver dReb. I do like the black XT. Doesn't have anything to do with picture quality but......

I agree partially with this. Feature-wise, it's not really enough to jump. But for the form factor switch that it sounds like you want to make, the drebel is in the same price range as the G6.

I would hold out for an XT.

A hacked 300d (drebel) will give you nearly the same performance as the XT. Not really worth the extra money for the XT IMHO. A worthwhile jump from the 300d is a 20d, or if you're shooting with heavy lenses and like the drebel performance, the 10d (nearly identical to a hacked drebel, just adds an all metal body).

Thanks for asking, actually at this point I'm gonna hold on to the G6. But i appreciate all the input.
