well judging by the red poppies, area rugs on the line, the garages that say no parking in Russian and the girl with straight bangs, you are currently somewhere in the former USSR :-)
I dont recognize those arches though... so where exactly are you?
I have some of those old lenses too that I have bought locally here in Sevastopol (with old camera bodies)... but never bothered to adapt them... they just sit on the shelf :-(

Hello Andrushka, yes it's Armenia, Steve is my mate from another thread. Armenia is a very beautiful country and I'm from South Africa but have been living here for 2 years.
The area with the poppies and arches is known as Zvartnots.
Steve, yes they are completely manual, it's a bit strange but fun "old school". My eyes are still ok(touch wood) so I don't have many focusing problems :) The crazy part is I got ALL of these for around $100!
Andrushka, DON'T let those lenses sit in a cupboard! :) Get yourself a M42 Mount and use them!

ok now, if this Jupiter 200mm was a 2.8 i'd have bought it right then... I had a 70-200L F/4 and just got tired of the F/4... but I guess I could mentally prepare myself for outdoor use only? oh and the guy had a 2x adapter for it (i didnt ask the price though) hmm... if i could pick up a EOS m42 adapter locally i would and then have the opportunity to try the lens before i bought it... hmmmm.....

Hey there! Thanks for the comments :)
@ Arnold, I picked up the Helios 85mm for $120 from an old guy at the local flea market here in Yerevan. He said he knows they go for around $300 to $400 on the internet but I guess he needed the cash. I've picked up most of my M42's off of him...The copy I have is a little bashed up on the outside but the glass is still great.
I've hinted around the market for another copy because I've seen them on ebay in great shape but they go for between $500 and $600 a piece. Mine does have character though and was built in 1966 :)

I have not seen those 2 lenses at my local market but I believe you will get great results from both, especially the Volna 3 as I believe it to be a great portrait lens and tack sharp too. That Telear I believe is not very well known but produces great results too.

they are already converted... so there is no issue - you are converting them to Canon EF mount (not EF-S)

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to mount them on the 5Dc via a M42 - EOS adapter, my question is if any of those will hit the mirror?

well I'm just saying there shouldnt be any difference between using these M42 adapted lenses on a 5D vs a crop body... 5D vs crop body only size of the used image circle changes, not the mirror - we can use all Canon EF mount lenses on both full and crop censors.

my bad - i looked it up: http://forum.manualfocus.org/viewtopic.php?pid=58876
apparently some adapted M42 lenses arent cool w/5D but it may have something to do with the specific adapter used...
the difference still doesnt make sense to me - maybe someone can enlighten me?

I think the mirror of full frame cameras is closer to the mount than that of crop cameras (maybe being a bigger mirror for a bigger sensor has something to do with that ?). That's why you cannot mount EF-S lenses on FF - they're designed for croppers, partly in a way that the rear part of the lens is "sticking out" compared to EF lenses thus being hit by the mirror on FF. Same problem with some M42 lenses.
So if anyone knows which ones of the lenses I listed will work on a 5Dc, I'll appreciate your letting me know.
P.S. If the lens' back sticking out is the only reason you cant put an EF-S lens on a FF, could it be (at least theoretically) possible to mount EF-S on FF using extension tubes?

I have a few Russian lenses, they are usually very good, sometimes the quality control is bad but a lot of the lenses are Zeiss clones from when the Russians found themselves in possession of a Zeiss factory after WWII
The Helios 44 family for example is equivalent to the Zeiss Biotar.
I have a Helios 44-2 and a 44m, they are both decent performers and fun to use. I also have an Industar 50mm F/3.5 and it is one of the smallest 35mm format lenses ever made, it almost looks like a toy but it gives excellent image quality.
I have just gotten hold of a very rare Oberon 11k, it's a 200mm F/2.8 and one of the last lenses before the fall of the soviet union mostly put a stop to lens production.
I haven't got it yet but I'm looking forward to trying it. Apparently it was only produced in low pre production numbers are there are around 800 copies in existence.
It's funny how you can get maybe 3 copies of the Helios 44-2 for the same price as one Zeiss jena 50mm f/2.8 on ebay yet the Helios is inherently superior because it is based on a lens higher up in the Zeiss range.

Six months ago I was given some old Russian cameras and lenses. A few days ago I realized the Jupiter 9 in a M39 mount was in fact a SLR lens (I assumed all M39 mounts were for rangefinders or enlargers). It works quite well on an XSI. The copy I was given was made in 1964.
Below is an early attempt at using the lens and I am looking forward to portraits with it.

Yup, I have the silver version, from 1964. Mine is a little more beat up than yours and I do not have the case (which looks nice).
I am just learning the lens, any pointers for using this lens? I understand there can be flare and that it is soft wide open.
So far the only subjects I can practice on are some of the larger flowers in our garden.

"Guys... there is NO Russian Helios 135mm! It could never be. This is a fake. It was not even a licensing agreement to sell the name (as was the case with Jena). A no-name Japanese company simply exploited the fact that KMZ did not register their trademarks abroad at the time, so it was even legal to sell these lenses in the Western market. Whoever wants to challenge me on that, please visit http://zenit.istra.ru/catalog/lenseslist.html - the official KMZ Web site with complete list of all lenses they made, developed, or prototyped.
In 135mm, there were Jupiter-11, Jupiter-37, Tair-11, Telezenitar and APO Telezenitar.
In Soviet lens nomenclature, Helios line of lenses were exclusively Planar designs. Jupiters were Sonnars, and Industars were Tessars"

Jupiter 11A - Early 1970's lens - my lens is a little stiff on the focus - but is still easy to get a focus - very nice lens and happy to learn about it.
Late summer flowers taken in the late afternoon in the garden.
This lens has a rounder aperture as can be seen in the upper left corner.

Oops, no, I didn't shoot that image at F2; it was shot at F8 (or thereabouts). I've corrected my post to make it more clear. Thank you! :)
BTW, Congratulations on the MTO-500A telephoto! Can't wait to see the images that it can produce!

I've just picked up a Helios 44-2, mostly to play with the swirly bokeh effect, but I'm impressed by its sharpness. This was taken around f/2.8-4 IIRC:

Cheap enough to get another! ;)
Joking aside, mine has a lovely smooth focus action that I found easier than my other MF lenses [CZJ 135/3.5, Vivitar 28/2.8]. Colours and contrast? Remains to be seen I guess.

Here are some of my first test shots with the manual Russian TAIR 11A 135mm F2,8 lens I picked up for $30 at the market today:
The lens is quite soft wide open which makes it an ideal portrait lens BUT it's very sharp when stopped down....
These are in no way artistic and no thought went into composition etc.... this was merely a test run :)

sorry guys, I am new here and would like to ask which Helios 44 lenses fit onto Canon DSLRs.
Do Soviet lenses focus to infinity on the Canon DSLRs?
May I know does the 50d or 500/550d has problems such as those encountered by the 5d (lens hitting mirror)?
Thank you.

Regarding the question about infinity. It depends on the M42 adapter and it also depends on the lens. Some lenses will focus to infinity some will not.
All Helios 44 lenses with the M42 screw mount will fit onto a Canon SLR with an M42 adapter. You can now buy adapters with electronic focus confirmation or without. I use the one with focus confirmation because I use a Rebel SLR which has a smaller viewfinder, so it helps a lot. If you have a larger viewfinder and good eyes, then the adapter with chip is not necessary.
I use the 500D and have no problems with the mirror. You can see the list of lenses I have in my sig.
